Lake Garda With Kids

Lake Garda with kids turns on one number, your child's height: under 90 cm is free at Gardaland and up to 1.20 m rides the Monte Baldo cable car free. It also works because the big family days sit close together: Gardaland, Movieland and the Parco Natura Viva zoo are all in the south-east corner, the boats turn transport into an outing, and several sights let small children in free. Below: which town to base in, what children pay sight by sight, the height rules, the season traps and rainy-day backups. Start with things to do and our family tours.

Quick answer Yes, and the south-east shore is the family base

A Gardaland day costs $50 a head on the fixed-date ticket, and children under 90 cm go free. On the longer ferry runs children 4-11 pay half the adult fare, and two adults buying day tickets bring up to two children aged 4 to 11 free on the Happy Family deal. Heights, not ages, decide most entries: 90 cm at Gardaland, 1 m on Sigurtà's little train, 1.20 m on the Monte Baldo cable car. Base in Peschiera or Lazise for parks and beaches.

Key takeaways

  • The south-east corner around Peschiera del Garda puts the theme parks, the train station and the flat Mincio bike path within reach of one base.
  • Heights decide what your child pays and rides, so measure before you go and check the rules on the ferry page and each park page.
  • The boat season runs to 1 November and the Sirmione cruise is the shortest, cheapest ride for small children, at $13 for 25 minutes.

Is Lake Garda Good With Kids

Yes, and the reasons are practical rather than romantic. Short distances, gentle water and a dense cluster of paid attractions do the work.

Short Distances, Shallow Shores, Three Theme Parks

Gardaland, Movieland and Parco Natura Viva all sit on the south-east corner around Peschiera and Lazise, so one base covers all three. A train, an ATV bus or a short drive links them. Boats double as transport: a ferry hop between towns keeps children entertained without paying for a sightseeing cruise.

Beaches such as Lido di Cisano near Bardolino are grassy with shallow water, which suits small children. Italy's largest lake stretches 51.60 km, but families rarely need more than one corner of it. Browse the full list of things to do and the town-by-town guide to pick your corner.

The Catch: Seasons and Heights

Winter is the trap. The state ferry company runs no passenger boats from 2 November to 12 March, only the Maderno-Torri car ferry crosses. Monte Baldo's cable car closes for maintenance 2 November to 25 December.

Parco Giardino Sigurtà shuts for the season on 15 November, and Gardaland has no opening days between 2 November and 4 December. Plan a cold-season trip around Parco Natura Viva's winter weekends, the Varone waterfall and the towns instead. Heights rule the parks: 90 cm free at Gardaland, 140 cm for its big coasters, and children up to 1.20 m ride the Monte Baldo cable car free.

Measure your child before you leave home.

Which Town to Base In With Children

Five towns suit families, each for a different reason. The table compares train access, beaches, parks and the walk to dinner.

Peschiera wins for trains and theme parks, Lazise and Bardolino for beaches, Desenzano for the biggest town services, Riva for mountains and wind sports. The choice matters less than the season: from 2 November to 12 March there are no passenger ferries, so a car-less winter base should sit on a bus or train line. Use where to stay for the full comparison of areas and rooms.

Peschiera del Garda for the Parks

Peschiera del Garda is a fortress town at the Mincio outflow, and its train station sits on the Milan-Venice line, so you can arrive from Verona without a car. Gardaland is 2 km away and a free shuttle runs from the station every 30 minutes, from 30 minutes before the park opens to 30 minutes after it closes. Movieland and the zoo are short bus or drive hops.

The Venetian walls make a flat evening walk. Book the Gardaland one-day ticket with the station shuttle in mind and skip the car park entirely.

Lazise and Bardolino for Beaches and the Bus

Lazise claims to be Italy's first free commune, an autonomy granted by a deed of Otto II in 983, and its walled centre is a limited traffic zone. ATV bus 164 links Garda, Bardolino, Lazise, Gardaland and Peschiera with Verona, so a base here works without a car in season. The Lido di Cisano beach, on the Bardolino side, is grassy with shallow water, the kindest entry on the lake for toddlers.

Bardolino exempts children up to and including 14 from its tourist tax, which runs $1.68-$2.79 (€1.50-€2.50) per night per adult. Read more in Lazise and Bardolino.

Riva del Garda for Older Kids

Riva sits at the mountainous northern tip where the wind picks up, so teenagers get windsurfing and sailing schools next door in Torbole. The town has no train station, the nearest is Rovereto with connecting buses, so a car helps here. The family-friendly sight is Cascata del Varone, a waterfall in a gated gorge a short drive away, with family tickets sold on site only.

Allow at least 20 minutes in the gorge. More in Riva del Garda and the windsurfing guide.

What Children Pay, Sight by Sight

Child pricing on Lake Garda is a mix of heights, ages and free-entry rules that differ by venue.

Read the table before you budget. Gardaland measures height, the ferries and Sigurtà measure age, the cable car and the little train measure height again. Where a ticket can be booked here, the table shows that ticket's price.

Where we sell nothing, such as the ferry, the waterfall and Heller Garden, the operator's own child fare is the useful figure. Under-18s enter the Sirmione castle free under the state rule, no ticket needed. Note the exceptions: children 0-2 enter Parco Natura Viva free, and Sigurtà's little train is free under 1 m tall whatever the age.

Height Is the Rule That Surprises

American parents expect age cutoffs. Here a tape measure decides. At Gardaland a child under 90 cm enters free, and the three biggest coasters need 140 cm, which splits families in half on ride day.

Sigurtà's panoramic train is free for children under 1 m and costs $5.59 (€5) otherwise. On the Monte Baldo cable car children up to 1.20 m travel free with a ticket collected from the office. Measure your child at home, write the number down, and you can predict almost every entry price in the table.

Theme Parks and the Zoo

Three parks and one aquarium cluster within a short drive of each other. One park day per trip is usually enough for children under ten.

Gardaland

Gardaland opened in 1975, drew 2,950,000 visitors in 2024 and has more than 40 attractions. Children under 90 cm enter free, and Peppa Pig Land plus Prezzemolo Land cover the smallest visitors. The big coasters, Blue Tornado, Oblivion and Raptor, all require 140 cm, so split your group by height and use Baby Switch, which lets parents take turns without queueing twice.

There is a nursery in Fantasy Kingdom, paid stroller rental for children under 110 cm, and child ID bracelets with your phone number from the Welcome office. Entry on the Gardaland one-day ticket is $50, fixed date and non-refundable. Details in Gardaland and Gardaland tickets.

SEA LIFE Aquarium

The aquarium stands next to the theme park, reached on foot, and is the best rainy-day ticket on the lake. Forty themed pools hold more than 5,000 creatures from about a hundred species, and a transparent tunnel passes sharks and stingrays overhead. Children under 90 cm enter free.

Strollers are not allowed inside, they stay in a covered outdoor warehouse, and free baby carriers are loaned at the entrance for infants under 9 kg, subject to availability. The open date ticket on the SEA LIFE ticket costs $10 and suits a flexible plan.

Movieland

Movieland is a movie-themed park in Lazise, part of the CanevaWorld resort, with 25 attractions split into Action, Adventure and Family levels. Children drive their own scaled-down speedboats and jeeps through animatronic dinosaurs. Stunt shows run through the day and infants can ride in strollers with infant seats available.

Movieland publishes its gate prices and calendar on canevaworld.it, so check your date there, or book the Hollywood VIP experience at Movieland at $148.24, which bundles admission, a guide and team missions. More in Movieland.

Parco Natura Viva

Parco Natura Viva at Bussolengo holds 1,500 animals across 200 species, with a safari section toured by bus with a nature guide (commentary in Italian). The safari entrance opens at 9:30 every day the park runs. The calendar is generous: open every day until 1 November, then every weekend until 20 December, then every day 26 December to 6 January, which makes it the rare family sight that survives into winter.

Children 0-2 enter free, and prices sit on the park's own ticket page. Combine it with Gardaland on a different day, not the same one, to avoid two heavy outings back to back.

Boats Children Enjoy

Boats are the lake's best family value. Short rides, real transport, and children pay reduced fares on the state ferries.

The Public Ferry and Happy Family

The state ferry company sells child fares for ages 4 to 11, roughly half the adult price: $8.94 (€8) for Sirmione to Riva and $9.83 (€8.80) for Desenzano to Riva, one way. Ages under 4 are not listed in the fare sheet, so ask at the ticket desk. The Happy Family deal is the family winner: buy two full-price day tickets and up to two children aged 4 to 11 ride free, with the whole-lake family day priced at $88.26 (€79).

Details and timetables in the Lake Garda ferry guide.

The 25-Minute Sirmione Loop

Sirmione's small harbor in front of the castle is where the 25-minute peninsula cruise departs, costing $13 per person with narration in Italian or English. The loop passes the Grottoes of Catullus, Maria Callas's villa and the sulfur spring, close enough to the shore to keep small children engaged. The ticket cancels free up to 24 hours ahead.

Pair it with the castle: under-18s enter free under the state rule, and the castle closes Mondays like the Grottoes. Plan the day with Sirmione boat trips.

Driving Your Own Little Boat

Older children love this one because a parent is the captain. The Fiat 500 boat rental in Sirmione costs $143 per boat for up to four people, one hour, and no boating license is needed. The driver must be 18 or over, and a €300 cash deposit is refunded after the boat check, so bring euros in cash. The GPS map on your phone guides the route past the Grottoes of Catullus and the castle, with a stop allowed for swimming.

Central parking is tight, so arrive by car a good 1 to 1.5 hours early.

Cable Car, Waterfall and Gardens

Three outings that feel like adventures without being theme parks. All three have clear rules for small children.

Monte Baldo Cable Car

The Malcesine cable car climbs about twenty minutes to 1,760 m on Monte Baldo, and the ride itself is the attraction for children. Children up to 1.20 m ride free with a free ticket collected from the office. Juniors born 2012 or later pay $20.11 (€18) return at the desk or $17.88 (€16) online.

The season runs 4 April to 1 November, with maintenance closure 2 November to 25 December, and departures run every 30 minutes weather permitting. Bring a layer for the top station. Prices and passes in Monte Baldo tickets.

Cascata del Varone

Near Riva del Garda, the Varone waterfall drops through a narrow gorge reached on gated walkways, and the spray is the entertainment. Allow at least 20 minutes, more with children who want to stand in the mist. The individual ticket is $7.82 (€7), and family tickets cost $21.23 (€19) for 2 adults plus 1 child, $26.81 (€24) for 2+2 and $31.28 (€28) for 2+3.

Tickets are sold on site only, no online option, so bring a card or cash to the desk. Hours run 10:00-17:00 in winter and 9:00-19:00 from May to August, closed only on 25 December.

Parco Giardino Sigurtà

Sigurtà is a 600,000 m2 historic garden at Valeggio sul Mincio, an easy day out with a pushchair thanks to about 10 km of porphyry paths and lawns. The panoramic little train, a 35-minute ride with commentary, costs $5.59 (€5) and is free for children under 1 m. There is a maze, two free stroller parks, and packed lunches are allowed on the lawn.

Dogs are not allowed except guide dogs, so leave the pet at the hotel. Entry on the Sigurtà ticket is $21.67 with child tickets for ages 5-14. Open every day 7 March to 15 November.

Beaches and Flat Bike Rides

The free half of a family trip. Shallow water, grass lawns and a car-free riverside path.

Beaches That Suit Small Children

The Lido di Cisano south of Bardolino is grassy with shallow water, the softest landing on the lake for toddlers. Rivalunga in Bardolino is public, sits along the walkway toward Garda and has kiosks for snacks and drinks. Most other shores are pebbly, so pack water shoes for everyone, children included.

Compare every option in the beaches guide and check the weather page before you commit a beach day.

The Mincio Path

From Peschiera del Garda the cycle path follows the Mincio river to Mantua, 45.2 km end to end and flat enough for children. The first leg to Borghetto, a preserved village of mills and a 14th-century Visconti bridge, is 14 km, which is a half-day out with a picnic stop. The full-day e-bike rental costs $39 per person, riders must be at least 155 cm tall, and the pickup is at a store in Peschiera. Younger children ride behind or wait for the beach.

Route ideas in the cycling guide and the flat ride pairs well with Parco Giardino Sigurtà at Valeggio.

When It Rains

Rain days need a plan, because most of the lake is outdoors. Four indoor or near-indoor options cover it.

The Indoor Shortlist

  • Take the aquarium first: the SEA LIFE ticket is fully indoors, open date, and children under 90 cm go free.
  • Gardaland stays open in the rain, but there is no refund for weather, so decide before you enter whether the children will still enjoy wet rides.
  • Sigurtà stays open in rain, though the train and carts may stop in heavy weather, and the farm portico 20 minutes from the entrance is the only covered spot.
  • Do the Sirmione sights, the castle and the Grottoes of Catullus, on a dry morning, because both close Mondays.
  • Keep the full indoor list from our rainy day guide saved offline before you leave the hotel.

With or Without a Car

Families manage fine without a car in season, and a car earns its cost at the northern tip. The trade-offs are below.

Without a Car

Trains stop at Peschiera del Garda and Desenzano, both flat lakefront towns, which is why they suit families arriving from Verona or Milan. The free Gardaland shuttle runs from Peschiera station every 30 minutes. ATV bus 164 chains Garda, Bardolino, Lazise, Gardaland and Peschiera.

From 13 March to 1 November the ferries move you between towns and children pay reduced fares. Riva is the outlier, reached by bus from Rovereto, so skip it car-less with toddlers. The full system is explained in getting around Lake Garda.

With a Car

A car wins for the northern towns, for Sigurtà and for the freedom to leave a beach when a toddler melts down. The Gardaland main car park on Via Derna is free, opens one hour before the park, and covered spaces are sold separately online. At Sigurtà free unguarded car parks sit about 600 m from the entrance, an easy pushchair walk.

Watch the Sirmione rules: the historic center is a limited traffic zone with fines of $92.73-$372.03 (€83-€333), and summer pedestrianisation blocks transit on afternoons. Rental basics are in the car rental guide.

How Many Days With Kids

Children pace a trip differently from adults. Our estimate below assumes one anchor outing per day.

Our Estimate

Two days is the minimum that works with children: one park day and one lake day with a short boat ride and a beach. Three days lets you add the cable car or the waterfall and keeps afternoons free for pools and gelato, which is where our estimate lands for most families. Beyond three days, repeat the beach rather than adding sights, because children value the familiar.

Follow the ready-made two-day itinerary or the three-day itinerary and swap in a park day.

Do This, Not That With Kids

Do

  • Measure your child's height at home and match it to the 90 cm, 1 m and 1.20 m rules before booking anything.
  • Buy the Gardaland ticket for a fixed date only after the weather forecast and travel day are settled.
  • Use the Happy Family ferry deal, two adult day tickets bring up to two children aged 4 to 11 free.
  • Plan one anchor outing per day and leave afternoons for the beach or the hotel pool.
  • Pack water shoes, cash for the boat deposit and a picnic for Sigurtà, where lawn lunches are allowed.

Don't

  • Don't plan a November or March trip around the ferries, there are no passenger boats 2 November to 12 March.
  • Don't take a stroller into SEA LIFE, it stays in the outdoor warehouse and free baby carriers cover infants under 9 kg.
  • Don't drive into Sirmione's historic center, the limited traffic zone fines run $92.73-$372.03 (€83-€333).
  • Don't count on a refund if Gardaland gets wet, the ticket rules exclude weather and power outages.
  • Don't visit the Sirmione castle or the Grottoes of Catullus on a Monday, both close.

Lake Garda With Kids: Questions

Is Lake Garda a good place to go with kids?

Yes. Three theme parks cluster on the south-east corner, the south shore beaches are shallow, and state ferries let children ride at reduced fares between 4 and 11. Under-18s enter the Sirmione castle free, and Gardaland admits children under 90 cm free. The main limit is seasonal: no passenger ferries run 2 November to 12 March. Build the trip from things to do and one park day from the tours list.

Which town in Lake Garda is best for families?

Peschiera del Garda for the train station and the free Gardaland shuttle, Lazise and Bardolino for grassy, shallow beaches and ATV bus 164, Riva del Garda for older children who want wind sports. Peschiera is the strongest single pick because trains, parks and the flat Mincio path all start there. Compare beds in where to stay and the town guide to Peschiera del Garda.

What is there to do in Lake Garda with toddlers?

Keep days short and rides gentler. The 25-minute Sirmione cruise is short enough for a toddler, Peppa Pig Land at Gardaland is built for the smallest visitors, and the Lido di Cisano beach offers grass and shallow water. Sigurtà's gardens are pushchair friendly with two free stroller parks, and the little train is free under 1 m tall. Avoid the cable car in wind and the big coasters entirely.

Do you need a car for Lake Garda with kids?

Not in season, if you base in Peschiera or Lazise. Trains reach both, the free Gardaland shuttle runs from Peschiera station every 30 minutes, ATV bus 164 chains the south-east towns, and ferries cover the lake until early November. A car earns its cost at Riva and Torbole, and for Sigurtà's free parking 600 m from the gate. The full comparison is in getting around Lake Garda.

Where should families stay with kids on Lake Garda?

Pick by age. Toddlers do best near Lazise or Bardolino for the shallow, grassy beaches, school-age children do best in Peschiera for the parks and the train, and teenagers suit Riva del Garda for windsurfing next door in Torbole. Bardolino also exempts children up to 14 from its tourist tax, a small but real saving. The areas, and what a room in each costs, are in where to stay.

What is there to do in Lazise with kids?

Lazise sits inside the parks corner: Movieland is in the municipality, Gardaland is just to the south, and the walled old town makes a flat evening walk. The Lido di Cisano beach, between Lazise and Bardolino, is grassy with shallow water, and ATV bus 164 links the town to Peschiera and Gardaland. More on the town in Lazise.

How many days do you need in Lake Garda with kids?

Two days works, our estimate for a comfortable family trip is three. Day one is the park, day two is a short boat ride plus a beach, and day three adds the cable car, the waterfall or Sigurtà's gardens. Repeat the beach on day four rather than adding sights, because children prefer the familiar. The ready-made plans in two days and three days slot a park day in easily.

Book the Park Day First

Pick the day your children will remember and lock it in, since the Gardaland ticket is fixed date and non-refundable. Everything else on the lake can be decided on the morning.
