Lake Garda Cost: Day Budgets, Fares and Room Rates

The Lake Garda cost of a sightseeing day runs from $7.82 (€7) to $58.09 (€52) per adult by our sums, before food and the room. Fares and tickets barely move with the calendar. Rooms do. This page adds up the published prices, from ferry zones to tourist tax, so a budget holds together. Pair it with things to do in Lake Garda to see what each line buys.

Quick answer A day's spend, the fares, the rooms

A sightseeing day at Lake Garda costs $7.82 (€7) to $58.09 (€52) per adult in fares and tickets by our sums, before food and the room. The room is the biggest line and swings hard with the season. The sights do not. The castle, the cable car and the boats cost the same in midsummer and in November, so the timing of your trip decides the bill more than the itinerary does.

Key takeaways

  • The cheapest boat outing is the 25-minute Sirmione peninsula cruise at $13 per person. It loops the peninsula from the castle harbour. See Sirmione boat trips for the other options.
  • The combined ticket covers Sirmione castle, the Grottoes of Catullus with the museum and the Roman Villa in Desenzano for $22.34 (€20) and stays valid for 7 days. That is the price of Sirmione castle and the Grottoes bought separately, with the Roman villa added free.
  • Room medians move more than any ticket: a Sirmione night for two averaged $225.67 (€202) in mid-July against $81.56 (€73) in mid-November in our samples. Compare towns and seasons on Lake Garda hotels.
  • Base yourself well and the extras shrink. At the north tip, guests of partner hotels in Riva del Garda get the Garda Guest Card with free buses and boats, and Lake Garda tours shows which paid trips earn their price. Start by comparing hotels on Lake Garda.

Four Day Budgets, Per Adult

Four sightseeing days built only from published adult prices: a boat hop to Sirmione, a Sirmione sights day, a mountain day at Malcesine and a whole-lake boat day. Food, rooms and travel to the lake are not included.

Four Worked Day Budgets

Four days built only from published adult prices, so you can see where the money actually goes.

The table below shows four days and what each one buys. Every figure is an adult price published by the operator or the Ministry itself, and each total is our sum of those published prices. The cheapest day is a simple shore day: the boat from Desenzano to Sirmione and back is fare zone 1 at $3.91 (€3.50) each way, $7.82 (€7) for the day, and once there the streets, the beaches and the castle view cost nothing.

The dearest is a mountain day at Malcesine, where the cable car, the castle and the ferry to Limone stack up. None of the totals includes meals, drinks, a room, parking or the train to the lake. The Sirmione sights day uses the combined $22.34 (€20) ticket plus a cheap boat leg.

The whole-lake day pass at $44.13 (€39.50) covers every passenger line from the southern stations to Riva.

What the Sums Leave Out

Meals, drinks, the room, the train from Milan or Verona and parking all sit outside these totals, and none of them has an official published price on the lake. No tourism board prints a menu average, a coffee price or a car park tariff, so the honest move is to read the menu posted at the door before you sit down and to ask the beach kiosk what a sun bed costs on the day. Count the room separately, because it swings more than everything else combined and gets its own section below.

Ferry Fares and Passes

The state ferry operator publishes its whole fare matrix, so boats are the easiest part of the budget.

Ordinary one-way fares are set by route zone on the operator's matrix, from zone U at $1.68 (€1.50) up to zone 7 at $19.55 (€17.50). A return ticket costs exactly double. The zones cover the crossings you will actually use: Desenzano to Sirmione is zone 1, Peschiera to Sirmione is zone 2, Malcesine to Limone is zone 3, Sirmione to Bardolino or Lazise is zone 4, Sirmione to Riva is zone 6, and Desenzano to Riva is zone 7.

Children aged 4 to 11 pay roughly half on longer zones, seniors and groups get a small cut. Day passes give heavy users a better rate, from a single-zone day to the whole-lake pass that is the only ticket including fast services. Full zone logic lives on the Lake Garda ferry page.

Surcharges and Discounts

Three extras catch visitors out. First, tickets bought on board while the ticket office is open carry a $1.12 (€1) surcharge per passenger, bag or vehicle, so buy at the window. Second, fast services (marked SR) charge the ordinary fare plus a zone supplement from $2.79 (€2.50) in zone 1 to $6.70 (€6) in zone 7, and no reductions apply on them, so children and seniors pay full rate.

Third, bicycles pay a zone fee of $3.91 (€3.50) in zone 1 up to $7.71 (€6.90) in zone 7, and fast runs do not carry bikes at all. On the discount side, Happy Family gives free day tickets to up to 2 children aged 4 to 11 when two full-price day tickets are bought, and Touring Club and ACI members travel at a reduced fare. All tickets are valid only on the day of issue.

The Car Ferry

The only car ferry on the lake crosses between Maderno on the west shore and Torri on the east. A car up to 3.50 m pays $13.74 (€12.30) with the driver included, each extra adult passenger adds $8.38 (€7.50), and a return costs double. There is no car ferry between Malcesine and Limone, so driving the east-to-west shore hop means the Maderno-Torri crossing or the long road around the south.

The crossing takes 30 minutes and runs all winter when the passenger boats stop. For the road alternatives, buses and the ZTL traps, see getting around Lake Garda.

Getting to the Lake by Train

The rail fare is the first cost of a car-free trip, and Trenitalia's journey planner prices the regional trains at fixed fares and the high-speed trains by demand. The table lists the main runs to the two lake stations, Desenzano del Garda-Sirmione and Peschiera del Garda, from Verona Porta Nuova and Milano Centrale. From Desenzano station, Sirmione is a bus or taxi ride, and the full routes are on Milan to Lake Garda and Verona to Lake Garda.

What the Sights Cost

The main gates publish their own adult prices, and they are modest next to the room rates.

The table below lists the published adult prices of the main paid sights, taken from each operator's or the Ministry's own page. The pattern is consistent: outside the spa, no single entry passes $33.52 (€30), and most sit between $5.59 (€5) and $13.41 (€12). The dearest single item is the Monte Baldo cable car return at $33.52 (€30) at the desk.

Sirmione's castle and the Grottoes charge $11.17 (€10) each, and the combined ticket adds the Roman villa in Desenzano for $22.34 (€20) in total, valid 7 days. Where an operator publishes no price, such as the Limonaia del Castèl in Limone, it is left out of the table, so ask at the door.

Where the Free Entries Are

Several big items cost nothing if you fit the right box. Under-18s enter Sirmione castle free, and EU citizens aged 18 to 25 pay only $2.23 (€2). On Monte Baldo, children up to 1.20 m travel free with a free ticket from the desk.

The Rambotti museum in Desenzano opens free to all visitors on the first Sunday of the month. Arco castle's Prato della Lizza garden costs nothing, though the historical area inside is $5.59 (€5). The Museo del Lago in Cassone, south of Malcesine, is free every opening day.

Families can stretch a day far on these, and more ideas sit on Lake Garda with kids.

What a Room Costs by Season

Rooms are the one line that changes the whole budget, and the season is the lever.

The table below compares the median and lowest rate Google Hotels returned for one Wednesday night for two adults in three sample weeks, mid-July, mid-May and mid-November, in Sirmione, Riva del Garda and Bardolino. Treat it as a reading of one search, not a price list. The samples are small.

Mid-July in Sirmione had only 7 hotels returning a rate at all, and rates move daily, so book summer early. The useful number is the shape, not the exact figure: the same town that costs over $220 for a July night drops below $100 by November, while every sight and boat on this page costs exactly the same in both months.

TownMid-May nightMid-July nightMid-November night
SirmioneMedian $155.29 (€139), lowest $88.26 (€79)Median $225.67 (€202), lowest $150.82 (€135)Median $81.56 (€73), lowest $54.74 (€49)
Riva del GardaMedian $140.77 (€126), lowest $90.49 (€81)Median $222.32 (€199), lowest $125.13 (€112)Median $87.14 (€78), lowest $54.74 (€49)
BardolinoMedian $292.71 (€262)Median $312.82 (€280)Median $138.53 (€124)

Reading the Numbers

Sirmione's median falls from $225.67 (€202) in mid-July to $81.56 (€73) in mid-November, a drop of close to two thirds. Riva del Garda runs from $222.32 (€199) in July to $87.14 (€78) in November, and its mid-May median of $140.77 (€126) is the cheapest spring sample of the three towns. Bardolino ran higher in all three samples, with a July median of $312.82 (€280).

July had the fewest hotels returning a rate at all, a sign of how early summer books out. If the bill matters, travel in May and read where to stay and the best time to visit.

Tourist Tax, Town by Town

Towns around the lake set their own tourist tax, and only a few publish the rates online.

The table below lists the towns whose rates are actually published. Bardolino charges $1.68-2.79 (€1.50-2.50) per person per night depending on the category, with children up to and including 14 exempt and a maximum of 20 consecutive nights. Limone sul Garda charges at most $2.23 (€2) at ordinary lodgings, $3.91 (€3.50) at a 5-star, $1.12 (€1) at camping, with under-10s exempt.

Sirmione posts its own rates on the Comune website, and Desenzano, Garda, Malcesine and Riva del Garda each set their own. Add a few dollars per person per night to any room budget, and check the booking confirmation for your town's exact rate. See Bardolino and Limone sul Garda for the town details.

What Nobody Publishes a Price For

Some of your biggest daily costs have no official figure anywhere, so plan around it.

Meals and Coffee

No official price exists for a meal, a coffee or a drink anywhere on the lake. No tourism board or municipality publishes a restaurant average. The consequence is simple: read the menu posted at the door before you sit down, and treat any online figure as a rumour.

If you want a food spend with a known number, book it. The Lugana wine tasting near Sirmione at $39 fixes the price of a vineyard visit with three wines and local pairings, so the afternoon's cost is settled before you arrive. For how the lake eats, from lake fish to olive oil, see Lake Garda food.

Beaches and Parking

Many beaches around the lake are free to enter, and Garda Trentino lists freely accessible beaches in Riva, Arco and Torbole where umbrellas and sun beds are hired on site. Sun beds cost extra where offered, and no operator publishes the rate, so ask the beach kiosk on the day, and some beaches, such as Brema in Sirmione, ask you to book sun beds ahead. Parking has the same gap, except in Sirmione, where the main public car park is Piazzale Monte Baldo.

The rule that does have a figure is the historic-centre ZTL: driving in without authorisation costs a fine of $92.73 (€83) to $372.03 (€333). That is the most expensive mistake on this page. Beach pickers should read Lake Garda beaches.

Ways to Spend Less

Every saving below comes from a published price or a published rule.

The lake rewards travellers who match the ticket to the day. Buy the cable car online, carry the right pass and stack the family deals. These are the reductions the operators themselves advertise.

  • Buy the Monte Baldo return online at $31.28 (€28) instead of $33.52 (€30) at the desk.
  • Show a 1-, 3- or 7-day ATV bus pass at the Malcesine valley station and take $3.35 (€3) off the Monte Baldo adult return.
  • Use the combined Sirmione ticket at $22.34 (€20) for the castle, the Grottoes and the Desenzano Roman villa, valid 7 days.
  • With children aged 4-11, Happy Family on the ferries gives up to 2 kids free day tickets with two full-price adult tickets.
  • Take the family ticket at Cascata del Varone: $26.81 (€24) covers 2 adults and 2 children against $31.28 (€28) at individual rates, our sum.
  • Stay with a partner hotel in Garda Trentino and the Garda Guest Card covers buses, boats, a Bastione lift return and castle entries.
  • Visit the Rambotti museum in Desenzano on the first Sunday of the month, when entry is free for everyone.
  • Shift the trip to May and capture the room savings, the biggest single cut available.

Paid Trips Worth the Money

A few paid outings earn their price because they buy something you cannot assemble from public transport. The Sirmione sunset boat tour at $34.21 adds a glass of Prosecco to a 45-minute evening loop. The four-hour cruise with a stop in Sirmione at $61 combines a guide, photo stops and two hours ashore in one booking. The Fiat 500 self-drive boat from Sirmione costs $143 per boat for up to 4, plus a $335.16 (€300) cash deposit refunded after the boat is checked, about $35.75 each by our sum, with no license needed. The Verona day trip from the lake at $73 handles the transfers and a guided walk. Browse the rest on Lake Garda tours.

Lake Garda Cost Questions

How much does a day at Lake Garda cost?

Our sums from published prices give $7.82 (€7) to $58.09 (€52) per adult for the tickets and fares of a full sightseeing day, before food and the room. The cheapest day is a boat hop from Desenzano to Sirmione and back, the dearest a mountain day at Malcesine with cable car, castle and ferry. Meals and rooms have no published price, so read menus at the door and count the room separately.

Is Lake Garda expensive to eat out?

No official price exists for a meal, a coffee or a drink on the lake, so nobody can print an honest average. The practical answer is to read the menu posted outside before sitting down, since no average is published. If you want a food cost fixed in advance, the Lugana wine tasting near Sirmione at $39 sets the price of wines and pairings up front. See Lake Garda food.

How much is the ferry on Lake Garda?

One-way fares run by zone from $1.68 (€1.50) to $19.55 (€17.50), and a return costs double, so Desenzano to Sirmione and back is $7.82 (€7). Fast services add a supplement of $2.79 (€2.50) to $6.70 (€6) with no reductions, on-board purchase adds $1.12 (€1), and the whole-lake day pass is $44.13 (€39.50). All the zone logic is on the Lake Garda ferry page.

How much is a hotel at Lake Garda?

It depends almost entirely on the season. In our samples of one Wednesday night for two adults, the median rate Google Hotels returned in Sirmione was $225.67 (€202) in mid-July and $81.56 (€73) in mid-November, and Riva del Garda fell from $222.32 (€199) to $87.14 (€78) over the same span. July had the fewest hotels returning a rate at all, so book summer early. Compare towns on Lake Garda hotels.

Is there a tourist tax at Lake Garda?

Yes. Each town sets its own. Only Bardolino and Limone publish their rates: Bardolino runs $1.68-2.79 (€1.50-2.50) per person per night with children up to 14 exempt, Limone charges $2.23 (€2) at most lodgings and $1.12 (€1) at camping with under-10s exempt. Other towns set their own, so check your booking confirmation. Town pages such as Bardolino carry the details.

When is Lake Garda cheapest?

November, by a wide margin. The sights cost the same all year, so the savings come from rooms: a Sirmione median night fell from $225.67 (€202) in mid-July to $81.56 (€73) in mid-November in our samples. Of the three nights sampled, May was the cheaper one with the boats running. Note the passenger boats stop from 2 November to 12 March, and see the best time to visit.

What does the cable car from Malcesine to the summit cost?

The adult return from Malcesine costs $33.52 (€30) at the desk and $31.28 (€28) online, so booking ahead saves $2.23 (€2). Holders of a 1-, 3- or 7-day ATV bus pass get a further $3.35 (€3) off at the valley station. Children up to 1.20 m ride free with a desk ticket. The cable car closes for maintenance from 2 November to 25 December, and check the day's timetable at the station. Details on Monte Baldo cable car tickets.
