Verona to Lake Garda: Train, Bus and Three Day-Trip Plans

Verona to Lake Garda takes 13 minutes by regional train to Peschiera for $4.52 (€4.05), the shortest big-city run to Italy's largest lake. Verona Porta Nuova is the gateway station: regional and high-speed trains reach Peschiera and Desenzano in under half an hour, ATV buses climb the east shore to Garda and beyond, and trains to Rovereto serve the northern tip around Riva. Peschiera is the first lake stop on the line. Once you arrive, the getting around Lake Garda guide covers boats, buses and the car ferry.

Quick answer Fastest, cheapest and the last train back

The regional train from Verona Porta Nuova reaches Peschiera del Garda in 13 minutes for $4.52 (€4.05), roughly hourly, and Desenzano in 21-23 minutes for $5.36 (€4.80). For Garda, Bardolino and Lazise, ATV line 164 runs from Verona. For Riva del Garda take the train to Rovereto, then the bus up the valley.

Key takeaways

  • Skip the Frecciarossa. It costs $16.76 (€15) for a 14-minute ride to Peschiera, one minute faster than the regional at $4.52 (€4.05). The cheap train is the right one here.
  • From Peschiera the boat reaches Sirmione in ferry zone 2 for $6.70 (€6) one way in season, the easy way into Sirmione. Plan it around the sailing times.
  • If you would rather not plan anything, the Verona day tour to Sirmione with a cruise costs $123 and handles the bus, the guide and the boat crossing. Browse more Lake Garda tours to compare.

By Train to Peschiera and Desenzano

Two stations on the Milan-Venice line sit on the south shore of the lake. The regional train beats the high-speed train on price by a wide margin.

On a weekday timetable, regional trains leave Verona Porta Nuova for Peschiera del Garda roughly hourly at :43, with morning departures at 07:43, 08:39, 09:43, 10:43 and 11:43. The ride takes 13 minutes and costs $4.52 (€4.05), a fixed fare on any regional that day. The Frecciarossa covers the same distance in 14 minutes for $16.76 (€15), and its fares change by train and date.

Peschiera or Desenzano

Peschiera is the first stop from Verona and the wiser choice for the east side. It sits at the Mincio outlet, within reach of Gardaland, and the boat run up to Lazise, Bardolino and Garda starts here. Desenzano is the stop for the west shore and for Sirmione, which is reached from the station by bus or by a short boat crossing in season.

Desenzano also holds the Roman villa that shares a combined ticket with Sirmione's castle and Grottoes. See Desenzano for what the west-side base offers.

By Bus Up the East Shore

The bus is the only direct public link from Verona to Garda town, Bardolino and the villages the railway skips.

ATV line 164 runs Verona-Castelnuovo-Peschiera-Gardaland-Lazise-Bardolino-Garda, so from Verona you can ride straight to Lazise, Bardolino or Garda without changing. Lines 483 and 484 continue the chain from Garda through Torri and Brenzone to Malcesine, and the Riva-Torbole-Malcesine side links the north tip. Fares are set by band: T1 at $1.68 (€1.50) up to T8 at $7.49 (€6.70), with a 24-hour pass at $12.29 (€11), a 72-hour pass at $24.58 (€22) and a 7-day pass at $49.16 (€44).

Buying from the driver costs $0.56 (€0.50) to $0.67 (€0.60) more, so buy before boarding where you can. No bus times are printed here: ATV timetables change by season, so check atv.verona.it before you set out. The Brescia-Verona extra-urban line also stops at Colombare in Sirmione, from where the seasonal shuttle (April to October) runs into the old town.

To Riva, Torbole and Malcesine

The fjord-like north tip sits in Trentino and needs one train change to reach.

Riva del Garda has no station. The nearest is Rovereto, and the ride from Verona Porta Nuova takes 40 minutes to 1 hour by regional for $7.76 (€6.95), or about 40 minutes by Railjet or Frecciarossa at $16.65 (€14.90) to $19.22 (€17.20). From Rovereto station, Trentino Trasporti buses run to Torbole, Riva and Arco, a stretch of about 17 km to Riva.

Tickets cannot be bought on board, so buy it before you board. Malcesine is reached two ways: ATV lines 483 or 484 along the east shore from Garda, or in season the boat from Riva down the lake. Check both timetables on the day, since seasonal schedules shift.

Three Day Trips From Verona

A full day at the lake fits easily into a Verona stay. Pick one shore and commit to it.

Sirmione by Train and Boat

Take the regional to Desenzano, 21-23 minutes at $5.36 (€4.80), then in season the boat to Sirmione, fare zone 1, 20 minutes at $3.91 (€3.50) one way. Outside the boat season, an extra-urban bus covers the same run. On the peninsula, visit Scaligero Castle, open Tuesday to Sunday 8:30-19:15 at $11.17 (€10), and the Grottoes of Catullus, also $11.17 (€10), Tuesday to Saturday 8:30-17:00 and Sunday 8:30-14:00.

Both sites close on Mondays, so check your day before you go. A combined ticket covering both plus the Roman Villa in Desenzano costs $22.34 (€20) and is valid 7 days. Trains back to Verona leave Desenzano at :49 each hour.

Peschiera, Lazise and Bardolino

Ride the 13-minute regional to Peschiera for $4.52 (€4.05) and pick up the boat at the landing. In the past summer season, run 14 sailed Peschiera at 8:00, Lazise at 8:28, Bardolino at 8:45 and Garda at 9:00, so the whole east-shore chain takes about an hour by water. Hop off at Lazise, continue to Bardolino for the lakefront and its wine tradition, or ride the full leg to Garda.

Walk one leg and boat the next to keep the day varied. Return by ATV line 164, which reverses the same towns back to Verona without a change. Sample times shift by season, so confirm the current sailing sheet before committing.

Malcesine and Monte Baldo

This is a long day from Verona, and worth it. Option one is the bus via Garda up the east shore. Option two is the train to Rovereto and the bus down to Riva, then the boat south to Malcesine.

In Malcesine, the cable car climbs to Monte Baldo at 1,760 m, with a return ticket at $33.52 (€30) at the ticket office or $31.28 (€28) online. The lift closes for maintenance from 2 November to 25 December, and departure times change across the season, so check the day's timetable before you build the trip around it. The castle in town keeps reduced winter opening, with weekday closures in the coldest months.

Stay in Verona or at the Lake

Verona works as a base for the south shore but not for the whole lake.

Verona makes sense if your trip is mostly the south. Peschiera is 13 minutes away, Desenzano a few minutes more, and the evening return runs late, with regionals from Peschiera at 22:58 on a weekday timetable. If the plan leans north, or you want two or three boat days, sleeping at the lake wins.

The 5-hour ordinary boat run the length of the lake means Riva and Malcesine are a long haul from Verona for a single day, and the passenger boats stop entirely from 2 November to 12 March. Browse where to stay for bases by shore, pick your sights from things to do in Lake Garda, and if you are already based at the lake, the Verona full-day tour from Lake Garda at $73 runs the reverse trip with transfers from towns including Limone, Lazise and Riva, or see Verona from Lake Garda for the DIY version.

Verona to Lake Garda: Questions

Is there a direct train from Verona to Lake Garda?

Yes. Direct regional trains run from Verona Porta Nuova to Peschiera del Garda in 13 minutes and to Desenzano del Garda-Sirmione in 21-23 minutes, roughly hourly on a weekday timetable. Both stations are on the south shore. The north lake has no station at the shore, so Riva and Torbole need a train to Rovereto plus a bus.

How much is the train from Verona to Lake Garda?

On a weekday timetable the regional to Peschiera costs $4.52 (€4.05) and to Desenzano $5.36 (€4.80), both fixed fares. The Frecciarossa to either station costs $16.76 (€15) and saves one to four minutes. Regional fares do not change by date, but Frecciarossa seats are priced by train, so the high-speed fare can rise.

Is there a bus from Verona to Lake Garda?

Yes. ATV line 164 runs Verona-Castelnuovo-Peschiera-Gardaland-Lazise-Bardolino-Garda, and lines 483 and 484 continue to Malcesine and toward Riva. Single fares run by band from $1.68 (€1.50) to $7.49 (€6.70), with 24-hour and 72-hour passes at $12.29 (€11) and $24.58 (€22). Timetables change by season, so check atv.verona.it.

How do you get from Verona to Sirmione?

Three ways. Take the regional train to Desenzano, then in season the 20-minute boat in fare zone 1 at $3.91 (€3.50), or a bus from the station area. Or ride ATV line 164 to Peschiera and boat across, zone 2 at $6.70 (€6). The Brescia-Verona extra-urban bus line also stops at Colombare in Sirmione.

Can you do a day trip from Verona to Lake Garda?

Easily. Peschiera is 13 minutes by regional train and Desenzano 21-23 minutes, so a full lakeside day fits with hours to spare. The east-shore boat chain from Peschiera to Garda takes about an hour by water in season. For a guided version, the Verona day tour to Sirmione with a cruise costs $123 and needs no planning, or build your own from Lake Garda tours.

Is it better to stay in Verona or Lake Garda?

For a two-to-five day trip focused on the south shore, Verona works, since Peschiera is 13 minutes away and evening trains run late on a weekday timetable. If you want the north lake, Monte Baldo, several boat days or beach mornings, sleep at the lake. Verona as a base costs you the early ferry starts and the north-tip fjord scenery that makes Garda different.

Sirmione and a Cruise in One Day From Verona

The Verona day tour pairs a guided Sirmione walk with a boat crossing to Lazise, with free time in both towns. It meets at Piazza Sacco e Vanzetti in Verona and cancels free up to 24 hours ahead.
