Lake Garda Restaurants: Where to Eat, Shore by Shore

Lake Garda restaurants divide neatly between the three shores, and the Michelin Guide's map tells you where the serious cooking sits. The Guide lists 24 restaurants across the lake towns on this page. Villa Feltrinelli in Gargnano holds the lake's only two stars, and the quiet west shore carries more starred tables than Sirmione. This page groups every listed table by shore, with award and price band, then covers the logistics that decide where you can actually eat: the ferry season, the Sirmione traffic gate and parking. For the dishes themselves, see our page on Lake Garda food, and for daytime plans see things to do in Lake Garda.

Quick answer Michelin tables on Lake Garda by shore

The Michelin Guide lists 24 restaurants across the lake towns, with Villa Feltrinelli in Gargnano the only one with two stars. The quiet west shore (Gargnano, Manerba, Limone) holds more starred tables than Sirmione, which has three one-star rooms. From 2 November to 12 March no passenger boat runs, so you eat in the town where you sleep.

South Shore: Sirmione, Desenzano and Padenghe

Starred tables on the peninsula and in Desenzano.

Sirmione

Sirmione sits on a long peninsula between the gulfs of Desenzano and Peschiera, with a Roman villa site at its tip. The Michelin Guide lists exactly three restaurants here, all with one star and all cooking in a creative style: La Rucola 2.0 near the castle in the historic centre, La Speranzina on Via Dante, and Tancredi on Via XXV Aprile, where young chef Vincenzo Manicone trained with Antonino Cannavacciuolo. All three sit in Michelin's top price band, so a visit is a decision, not a walk-in.

Expect to book well ahead in summer, and mind the historic-centre traffic gate that runs from 23 March to 13 October. Our Sirmione restaurant guide covers where else to eat there, district by district.

Esplanade, Desenzano del Garda

Desenzano is the lake's rail town, where every Milan-Venice train stops, which makes Esplanade an easy dinner target. The Michelin Guide gives it one star for Italian cooking in the Spare no expense band. It is a historic restaurant, and the Guide notes the view of the lake from the outdoor tables.

For couples, tables for two to six can be set apart, weather permitting. Book before you drive over, and if you want context for the town, see our Desenzano del Garda page.

Aquariva and Il Rivale al Lago, Padenghe

Padenghe sul Garda sits on the Brescia shore just north of Desenzano. The Michelin Guide lists two restaurants here on Via Marconi, both in the Special occasion band, neither with a star. Aquariva is known for fish, with a choice of raw fish and a plateau royale, and the dining room has views of the lake.

Il Rivale al Lago is a short walk from the shore and serves classic Italian dishes with a creative twist alongside top international ingredients. Either works for a birthday or an anniversary when a starred room is full. Both share a street, so you can compare menus before you commit.

West Shore: Manerba to Limone

The Brescia shore carries most of the stars.

Capriccio and Dalie e Fagioli, Manerba

Manerba del Garda sits on the west shore below the Rocca di Manerba, and it holds two Michelin tables. Capriccio at Montinelle has one star for modern cuisine and has been in business since 1965. It has a covered terrace with a glimpse of the lake, and when the weather fails there is an elegant indoor dining room.

The price band is Special occasion, which for a star is the gentler end of the Guide's scale. In the same town, Osteria Dalie e Fagioli is listed with no star, cooking country food inspired by Brescia and other regional traditions at a moderate spend. The pairing is the point: one starred splurge, one honest trattoria in the same town.

Gardone Riviera: Antico Brolo and Villa Fiordaliso

Gardone Riviera is the west-shore town where the poet Gabriele d'Annunzio made his home above the lake at the Vittoriale, now a museum. The Michelin Guide lists two restaurants in town. Osteria Antico Brolo sits in the upper part of town near the Vittoriale estate, in a rustic 18C building, serving regional cuisine with seasonal ingredients in a small courtyard at a moderate spend.

Villa Fiordaliso is an early 20C villa on the lake front, one of the villas that line the shore, extending out onto a pontoon over the water. Its cooking is Italian contemporary in the Spare no expense band. After dinner, the Vittoriale degli Italiani sits above the town.

Il Cortiletto, Toscolano-Maderno

Toscolano-Maderno is the twin town where the Maderno shore faces the car ferry to Torri del Benaco on the opposite bank. The Michelin Guide lists Il Cortiletto on the lake road itself, with no star and a moderate spend. It is small and simple, cooking Mediterranean dishes with the occasional inventive twist, and the Guide's own advice is to opt for alfresco dining.

That makes it a useful lunch stop if you are driving the west shore between Gardone and Gargnano, and it works as an early dinner if you are crossing on the car ferry. Being on the main road, it is a car dinner rather than a strolling one.

Gargnano: Villa Feltrinelli and La Tortuga

Gargnano is where Franciscan monks first brought citrus to the lake in the 13th century, and today it holds the lake's highest-rated table. Villa Feltrinelli on Via Rimembranza has two stars, the only restaurant on the lake with two, cooking in a creative style within the grand villa hotel of the same name. The Guide describes the setting as the lake before you and the mountains behind.

The price band is Spare no expense. A few doors away, La Tortuga, which the Guide calls a byword for quality for decades, holds one star for Italian contemporary cooking in an intimate, romantic dining room. Gargnano's walls also grow wild capers, hand-picked and salted, which turn up on local plates.

Senso Lake Garda Alfio Ghezzi, Limone

Limone sul Garda is the lemon town at the north end of the west shore, where the walled Limonaia del Castèl dates to the early 18th century. The Michelin Guide gives one star to Senso Lake Garda Alfio Ghezzi, inside the EALA My Lakeside Dream hotel on Via IV Novembre, cooking in a creative style in the Spare no expense band. The Guide suggests arriving early to admire the lake views through the floor-to-ceiling glass, so build in time for an aperitif.

Pair the dinner with the town itself: the Limone sul Garda lemon garden Limonaia del Castel sits nearby and makes a good pre-dinner walk.

East Shore: Bardolino, Garda and Malcesine

Veneto tables and the wine hills.

Bardolino

Bardolino gave its name to the light red wine made around it from Corvina Veronese, served young at 14-16 C, and to Chiaretto, the pale rosé of this shore. The town's own food list is the one locals eat: lake fish fried or grilled, risotto with tench, bigoli pasta with aole, the small lake fish, pike in sauce and marinated fish en saor. The Michelin Guide lists two restaurants here.

Il Giardino delle Esperidi on Via Mameli cooks seasonal cuisine in the centre at a moderate spend, with tables both inside and out. La Veranda del Color at the Color Hotel on Via Santa Cristina is Mediterranean cooking in the Special occasion band, served on a glass-enclosed veranda facing the pool that opens in fine weather. Before dinner, a Bardolino vineyard tour and wine tasting above town covers five wines with local food.

Garda

Garda town sits on the east shore, in the Bardolino Classico wine zone. The Michelin Guide lists two restaurants here, both in the Special occasion band with no star. Locanda Perbellini Ai Beati stands on the first hills behind Garda on Via Val Mora, where the terrace embraces the southern part of the lake and the interiors were carved out of an old building.

Regio Patio is the gourmet restaurant of the Regina Adelaide hotel, a short walk from the lakefront, with an English-style garden and an outdoor patio. If you would rather cook your dinner, the Lake Garda cooking class with dessert runs from Garda with hotel pickup and includes the meal you make.

Oseleta, Cavaion Veronese

Cavaion Veronese lies a few kilometres from the lake, in the Bardolino Classico wine zone, on gentle vine-clad slopes. The Michelin Guide gives one star to Oseleta at Villa Cordevigo, whose entrance opens between two rows of cypress trees. The cooking is creative and the price band is Spare no expense.

Being inland, you need a car or a taxi, since no ferry serves it, but the drive through the wine hills is part of the evening. Combine it with a stop in Bardolino or a tasting on the bardolino wine route before or after.

Vecchia Malcesine

Malcesine is the castle town on the east shore, where the Monte Baldo cable car climbs from the lake to the mountain ridge. The Michelin Guide gives one star to Vecchia Malcesine on Via Pisort, right at the entrance to the old town, cooking country cuisine in the Spare no expense band. A small garden of olive trees fronts the restaurant, and the dining room looks over the rooftops of Malcesine, so you get the view without climbing.

That makes it a natural end to a day spent at Malcesine Castle or on the Monte Baldo cable car.

North Tip: Riva, Torbole and Arco

Trentino cooking at the top of the lake.

Al Volt, Riva del Garda

Riva del Garda is the port town at the lake's north tip, under the limestone walls where the fjord-like upper lake begins. The Michelin Guide lists Al Volt on Via Fiume with no star and a moderate spend, cooking country food. The Guide places it in the narrow streets that lead from the commercial port to the centre, in a set of interconnected dining rooms with low ceilings, so it is a covered-alley dinner rather than a lakefront one.

See our Riva del Garda page for what to do before you sit down.

Torbole: Aqua and La Terrazza

Torbole is the windsurfing village at the very top of the lake, beside Riva. The Michelin Guide lists two restaurants. Aqua on Lungolago Conca d'Oro is Italian contemporary in the Special occasion band, and its best space is a contemporary veranda dining room with views over the lake and the sailboats on the water.

La Terrazza on Via Benaco overlooks the lakefront a few steps from the centre, cooking fish and seafood at a moderate spend in a small room with a panoramic veranda, a tribute to the flavours of the lake. Order lake fish at either and you are eating the local tradition, which here pairs with Torbole broccoli, a Slow Food product.

Locanda 53 Supper Club, Arco

Arco stands inland from Riva under its castle, a former spa resort that now calls itself Italy's climbing capital. The Michelin Guide lists Locanda 53 Supper Club on Via Vergolano in the historic centre, contemporary cooking in the Spare no expense band. The format is the draw: just three tables and eight covers in total, on the first floor of a building in the old centre, and it feels like entering the home of the two hosts, Evelyn and Carlo.

The local dish to know is carne salada, lean beef salted with bay, pepper, juniper, garlic and rosemary, ready after 25 days, a tradition dating to the 15th century around Arco and Tenno. See our Arco page for the castle visit first.

Reading the Price Bands

What Michelin's four bands mean for the bill.

The Michelin Guide labels each restaurant with a price band rather than a printed bill total, and the Guide prints no menu prices for these Lake Garda tables. The bands on this lake are A moderate spend, Special occasion and Spare no expense. The table below sorts every Michelin listing on and above the lake by the band its own Guide page shows, so you can see at a glance where a splurge sits and which towns keep a moderate table.

No euro or dollar figure appears because the Guide does not print one, so treat the band as the promise and confirm the bill when you book.

Getting to Dinner

Boats, traffic gates and seasons decide where you can eat.

When the Boats Stop

The ferry timetable is the single biggest constraint on a Lake Garda dinner plan. From 2 November to 12 March there are no passenger boats on the lake. The only service in that window is the Torri del Benaco to Maderno car ferry, which carries cars across the narrow waist, not diners.

The practical rule is simple in winter: eat where you sleep, or drive. From 5 October to 1 November and again from 13 to 25 March the spring and autumn passenger timetable runs, and the full summer service returns after that. Check the day's timetable on our Lake Garda ferry page before you promise yourself dinner in another town.

Traffic Gates

Two traffic zones catch drivers heading to dinner. Sirmione's historic centre sits inside a ZTL, a restricted zone, enforced from 23 March to 13 October each year. Vehicles need prior authorisation, plates are registered, and there is one electronic entry point, so driving in without permission means a fine of $92.73 (€83) to $372.03 (€333).

Park outside and walk in, or arrive by the town's shuttles. Bardolino's centre is also a ZTL, with car parks marked around its edge, so leave the car at the lakefront lots and walk the last stretch. Our getting around Lake Garda page covers the options, and if you plan to drive in, our Lake Garda car rental page explains the rules.

Eating Out at Lake Garda: Dos and Don'ts

Small habits that make a Lake Garda dinner work.

Do

  • Book starred restaurants days or weeks ahead, because rooms like Villa Feltrinelli's and the eight covers at Locanda 53 fill long before the evening.
  • Check the ferry timetable before dinner in another town, because from 2 November to 12 March no passenger boat runs at all.
  • Park outside Sirmione's historic centre and walk in, because the ZTL from 23 March to 13 October fines unauthorised plates $92.73 (€83) to $372.03 (€333).
  • Order the lake fish where the town fishes it, because whitefish, pike and perch are the professional catch and some restaurants buy directly from fishermen.
  • Pair dinner with the local wine by shore, because Lugana goes with the south, Bardolino and Chiaretto with the east, and Valtenesi rosé with the west.

Don't

  • Don't assume a Michelin listing means a star, because 24 tables are listed here and only Villa Feltrinelli holds two stars, with nine others holding one.
  • Don't drive into Bardolino's centre looking for a parking spot at dinner time, because the centre is a ZTL and the car parks sit on its edge.
  • Don't plan a boat dinner on the winter dates, because between 2 November and 12 March only the Torri-Maderno car ferry runs.
  • Don't expect printed prices from the Michelin Guide, because the listings show price bands only, so confirm the menu when you book.
  • Don't skip the modest tables, because moderate-band rooms like Il Cortiletto and La Terrazza serve the same lake cooking without the starred bill.

Lake Garda Restaurants: Questions

Are there Michelin-starred restaurants on Lake Garda?

Yes. The Michelin Guide lists 24 restaurants on and above the lake, and ten of them hold stars. Villa Feltrinelli in Gargnano has two stars, the lake's only double. Nine tables hold one star: La Rucola 2.0, La Speranzina and Tancredi in Sirmione, Esplanade in Desenzano, Capriccio in Manerba, La Tortuga in Gargnano, Senso in Limone, Oseleta in Cavaion and Vecchia Malcesine. For the starred tables on the peninsula, see our Sirmione restaurant guide.

Which Lake Garda restaurant has two Michelin stars?

Villa Feltrinelli in Gargnano is the only two-star table on the lake. It cooks in a creative style inside the grand villa hotel of the same name on the west shore, with the lake in front and the mountains behind. Its Guide price band is Spare no expense. Gargnano also holds a one-star neighbour, La Tortuga, so the village is worth planning around. The hotel itself is on luxury hotels on Lake Garda.

Where are the best restaurants on Lake Garda for a moderate budget?

Six Michelin-listed tables sit in the A moderate spend band. Osteria Dalie e Fagioli in Manerba and Il Cortiletto in Toscolano-Maderno cook country food on the west shore, Osteria Antico Brolo serves regional dishes near the Vittoriale in Gardone Riviera, Il Giardino delle Esperidi cooks seasonal cuisine in Bardolino, and Al Volt and La Terrazza cover Riva del Garda and Torbole in the north. Prices are bands, not figures, so confirm when you book. All six are on the map.

Which side of Lake Garda has the most restaurants listed by Michelin?

The west shore, the Lombardy side. It holds the lake's only two stars at Villa Feltrinelli in Gargnano, plus one-star tables in Gargnano, Manerba and Limone, and listed tables in Gardone Riviera, Toscolano-Maderno and Padenghe. Sirmione, despite its fame, lists exactly three starred tables. The east shore covers Bardolino, Garda, Cavaion and Malcesine, and the north tip covers Riva, Torbole and Arco. Every table is on the map.

Do I need to book Lake Garda restaurants ahead?

For starred and Special occasion tables, yes, book well ahead, especially in summer. Several rooms are small by design, and Locanda 53 Supper Club in Arco seats just eight covers across three tables. Moderate-band osterias are easier to get into. Plan the booking around how you arrive, because from 2 November to 12 March no passenger boats run and winter dinners mean driving. See getting around Lake Garda.
