Lake Garda Weather: Averages by Month and Shore

Lake Garda weather runs on two sets of numbers. On the southern shore the July average high is 29.6°C (85°F), while the north tip around Riva is cooler and wetter all year. This guide gives 30-year averages for both halves, the two daily winds, the mountain climate above Malcesine, and links to the official forecasters. It is part of the Lake Garda Travel Guide, alongside what to see in Lake Garda.

Quick answer Temperatures, rain and wind by month

July is the warmest month, with a 30-year average high of 29.6°C (85°F) on the southern shore, and January the coldest at 8.3°C (47°F). November is the wettest month in both halves of the lake, at 113 mm in the south and 141 mm at the north tip. The north around Riva is wetter than the south in every month of the year. From late spring the afternoon Ora wind is the rule on the water.

Key takeaways

  • The north tip gets about 1,356 mm of rain a year against 981 mm in the south, and more rain in every single month. If you base in Riva del Garda, keep a wet-weather plan for each day, especially between April and November.
  • Monte Baldo is about 12°C colder than the lake in July. The top station at 1,760 m averages 17.4°C (63°F) on a July afternoon against 29.6°C (85°F) at lake level, so Monte Baldo needs a warm layer even in summer.
  • A wet day does not end the trip. The Gardaland SEA LIFE aquarium ticket at $10 is an open-date indoor plan, and there are more rainy day ideas for any shore.
  • For the full season picture, from ferry dates to crowd levels, see the best time to visit, then plan the rest of your trip around things to do in Lake Garda at your own pace.

The North Tip Month by Month

Average daily high by month at the north tip around Riva del Garda, in Celsius with Fahrenheit underneath, from the ERA5 reanalysis for 1995-2024. The bands mark the warm boat months, the hottest weeks, the wettest stretch and the winter gap.

The north tip gets more rain than the south in every month. The south's figures are in the table above.

Lake Garda Weather by Month

The table above is the southern basin, where most first-time visitors base, and the seasons read like this.

December to February

Winter is mild for the latitude but far from warm. Southern average highs sit at 9.0°C (48°F) in December, 8.3°C (47°F) in January and 10.5°C (51°F) in February, with lows between 2.6°C and 3.9°C (37-39°F). Frosty nights are normal: about 4.9 nights below freezing in January, 2.8 in February and 2.3 in December.

January is also the driest month of the year at 53 mm of rain, so a clear, cold lakeside walk is a real possibility. Snow at lake level averages under half a centimetre in any month, so a white Christmas on the shore is rare. Towns stay open and quiet, and Christmas markets run on the Trentino shore.

See Lake Garda in winter for what actually operates.

March to May

Spring climbs fast. Southern highs rise from 14.5°C (58°F) in March to 18.4°C (65°F) in April and 22.8°C (73°F) in May, with May nights at 14.6°C (58°F). The price is rain.

March brings 64 mm, April 88 mm and May 103 mm, and May averages 13.3 wet days, the most of any month in the south. The passenger boats switch to the summer rhythm as the season builds, and the ferry timetable matters more than the temperature for a shore-hopping plan. Pack a rain jacket for May even if the forecast looks kind.

For the trade-offs between spring warmth, rain and crowds, see the best time to visit Lake Garda.

June to August

Summer is hot and mostly dry by the hour, not by the day. Southern highs run 27.3°C (81°F) in June, 29.6°C (85°F) in July and 29.2°C (85°F) in August, with warm nights of 21.3°C (70°F) in July and August. Days of 30°C (86°F) or more average 7.7 in June, 14.2 in July and 12.4 in August.

Rain still falls, 74 to 85 mm a month, on about 11 to 12 days each month, so a shower can interrupt a beach afternoon without ending it. Mornings are the cooler, calmer hours. Beach weather is the whole point of this season: see Lake Garda beaches for where to swim on each shore.

September to November

Autumn starts generous and ends wet. Southern highs fall from 24.3°C (76°F) in September to 19.1°C (66°F) in October and 13.1°C (56°F) in November. Rain rises with the season: 92 mm in September, 99 mm in October and 113 mm in November, the wettest month of the year.

The lake also closes down as it rains. The passenger boats move to the autumn timetable on 5 October and stop completely on 2 November, leaving only the Maderno-Torri car ferry until 12 March. An early September trip still feels like summer on the water, a late November trip does not.

Two Climates on One Lake

The wide south and the narrow north are 51.60 km apart and do not share a climate.

The North Tip Is Wetter

The Riva grid cell gets about 1,356 mm of rain a year against 981 mm in the south, and it rains more at the north tip in every month. July alone brings 114 mm there against 74 mm in the south. Wet days follow the same pattern: about 147 a year against 122.

November is the wettest month at 141 mm, and April through August all average 110 mm or more. The north is a fjord under high mountains, the south open moraine country. On a Riva del Garda or Torbole holiday, build a wet-weather option into every day rather than betting on one dry week.

The South Is Hotter

The southern basin wins the summer heat contest by a wide margin. It averages 14.2 days of 30°C (86°F) or more in July against 7.8 at the north tip, and 12.4 against 7.4 in August. That is roughly double the very hot days on the southern shore, where Sirmione and Desenzano sit in the open low country.

The one twist is winter: the north tip is slightly milder then, with a January average high of 9.1°C (48°F) against 8.3°C (47°F) in the south. So Sirmione and Desenzano del Garda are the hotter bases for a summer beach trip, while Riva trades heat for mountain air and more rain.

Which End to Pick for the Weather

Pick the south for heat, drier summers and the long ferry season across the wide basin. Pick the north for cooler summer afternoons, wind sports and mountain scenery, accepting about 375 mm more rain a year by our sum and wetter months from April to August. The choice is really a choice of base, because the ferry does not run at all from 2 November to 12 March and day trips depend on where you sleep.

Compare the towns and their seasons on where to stay before you book.

The Peler and the Ora

Two daily winds run the lake like a timetable.

The Peler, From the North in the Morning

The Peler is the north wind that blows from night into the late morning, usually around 20 knots and up to 30 at its strongest, according to Visit Malcesine. It is the reason the water is rarely flat at dawn on the northern half. Early swims in calm water are not the rule around Malcesine and Torbole,.

If you plan an early boat trip or a paddle from Malcesine northwards, expect a chop until the wind turns.

The Ora, From the South After Lunch

The Ora is the south wind that starts between about noon and 1 pm and dies at sunset, normally around 15 knots at Malcesine. It arrives so reliably that it defines the afternoon on the water, and it is why Torbole is a windsurfing town. Learners get a wind that comes back on schedule, which is what the Torbole windsurfing course at $95, 2 hours with all gear included, is built on.

One warning from the same sources: a daytime storm can bring a violent wind inversion, so treat a building dark sky over the water as a signal to come ashore. More on this at Lake Garda windsurfing.

What the Wind Does to Boat Trips

Booked boat trips have clear weather rules, and they favour the traveller. The historic sailboat cruise from Malcesine at $45 for 2 hours is cancelled with a refund or a new date in thunderstorms, heavy rain or strong wind, so a rough forecast costs you nothing. The 25-minute Sirmione peninsula cruise at $13 sends an SMS to your booking number if weather cancels it, and you then choose a refund or a new date. The practical habit is to book water trips early in your stay, so a weather cancellation still leaves days to rebook. Compare other options on Lake Garda tours.

Monte Baldo Has Its Own Weather

The mountain above Malcesine lives in a different season from the lake below it.

Twelve Degrees Colder at the Top

The cable car climbs for about 20 minutes from Malcesine to the top station at 1,760 m, and the temperature falls with it. The table below compares the 30-year averages downscaled to that altitude with the lake-level figures from the same ERA5 reanalysis series. The headline: a July afternoon at the top averages 17.4°C (63°F) against 29.6°C (85°F) at lake level in the south, about 12°C colder.

January averages a high of -1.7°C (29°F), with about 15.7 cm of snow in January and 18.6 cm in February. The operator warns that the weather changes suddenly and asks visitors for proper clothing, hiking shoes and a hat. Full mountain details on Monte Baldo.

Cable Car Tickets and Bad Weather

The cable car's own terms are strict, so treat the mountain as a same-day decision. Tickets are valid one day and are not refundable, with no refund for bad weather or a partial shutdown for wind or technical faults. An online slot does not guarantee departure at that time.

An adult return costs $33.52 (€30) at the desk or $31.28 (€28) online. The sensible routine is to look at the forecast the evening before, and if the sky is doubtful, buy at the station on the day instead of prepaying for a ride that may not run. The full rules and seasons sit on Monte Baldo cable car tickets.

Heat, Rain and Swimming

Summer heat, unpredictable rain and cold lake water each need their own plan.

The Hot Weeks

A southern July averages 14.2 days of 30°C (86°F) or more, and nights stay warm at 21.3°C (70°F), so sightseeing in the middle of the day is hard work. Do the castle and the Grottoes in the morning instead. The Grottoes open at 8:30, last entry is 40 minutes before closing, and they close on Mondays.

The Ministry page lists these hours but does not say whether they are summer or winter hours, so check before you go. After lunch, take to the water or shade rather than the ruins. Hours and tickets for the Roman site are on the Grottoes of Catullus.

How Warm the Water Is

No tourism board or agency publishes a monthly water temperature for the beaches, so any figure you read online for swimming at Lake Garda is someone's guess. The official advice comes from the Coast Guard instead: do not underestimate waves and low water temperatures, do not enter the water when the red flag is flying, and stay inside the buoys that mark the safe bathing area. The lake is 346 m deep at its deepest.

Treat the first swim of the season as a shock, and watch the flags on the beach. Beach-by-beach advice is on swimming in Lake Garda.

Rainy Days

Rain is not evenly spread. May has the most wet days in the south, 13.3, and November the most rain, 113 mm, so a washed-out day is likeliest at those ends of the season. A rain day still works if you planned for it. The cooking class in Garda town at $111 runs 3 hours with hotel pickup and is adults only, so the rain never touches it.

The spa in Sirmione is another indoor anchor, with thermal pools that run hot in every season. Keep a shortlist ready rather than improvising on the day: more ideas at a rainy day at Lake Garda and Terme di Sirmione.

What to Pack, Season by Season

The averages above turn into a packing list that changes twice a year.

Summer and the Shoulder Months

Our advice, built from the averages on this page: a sun hat and water for the 30°C afternoons, and a light layer for evenings and for any trip up Monte Baldo, where a July afternoon averages 12°C colder than the shore. A rain jacket earns its space in May, which averages 13.3 wet days in the south, and at the north tip in every month, since Riva is wetter all year. Shoes for rock and pebble beaches matter too, because the lake shore is rarely soft sand.

Bring all of it even for a short trip, since a single day can move from hot lake to cold mountain to shower.

Winter

A warm coat covers southern lows near 2.6°C (37°F) and the frosty nights of December to February. On Monte Baldo, where January highs average below freezing at -1.7°C (29°F), bring proper winter gear rather than a city coat. Drivers have a legal duty as well: the Province of Verona requires winter tyres or chains on board from 15 November to 15 April on its provincial roads, in every Verona municipality including the lakeside ones.

The ordinance is reissued each winter, so confirm the current rule. Rental specifics are on car rental at the lake.

Reading the Forecast Before a Lake Day

This page is the averages, and the day itself needs a forecast.

Where to Check

Use the official services, not a generic widget tuned to a distant city. The Italian Air Force weather service Aeronautica Militare forecast covers all of Italy, and ARPA Lombardia weather covers the Lombardy shore in depth. Check the wind as well as the rain whenever a boat trip or the cable car is booked, because the cable car terms exclude refunds for a wind shutdown.

The night-before check is the habit that matters, since mountain weather turns fastest and the Ora builds after lunch.

What to Book and What to Leave Open

Split your bookings by their weather terms. Book ahead only what refunds: the 25-minute Sirmione peninsula cruise notifies you by SMS if weather cancels and offers a refund or a new date, and the historic sailboat cruise from Malcesine cancels with a refund or an alternative date in thunderstorms, heavy rain or strong wind. Leave the non-refundable mountain ticket to the day itself.

Keep an indoor card in reserve: the Gardaland SEA LIFE aquarium ticket at $10 is an open-date ticket, valid any day of the season. For a dry day off the water, the Madonna della Corona day from Verona at $148 pairs a cliff sanctuary with lunch on Monte Baldo. Browse more on Lake Garda tours.

Lake Garda Weather Questions

What is the weather like at Lake Garda in September?

September is a warm, fairly dry month that still feels like summer. The southern shore averages a high of 24.3°C (76°F) with 92 mm of rain, and the passenger boats run their full season until the autumn timetable starts on 5 October. The north tip is a little cooler at 23.7°C (75°F) and wetter at 112 mm. Plan water days early in the month, before the autumn timetable.

What is the weather like at Lake Garda in October?

October turns the lake towards autumn. Southern highs average 19.1°C (66°F) with 99 mm of rain, and the north tip is slightly warmer at 19.3°C (67°F) but much wetter at 127 mm. The important change is operational, not climatic: passenger boats switch to the autumn timetable on 5 October and run reduced services until they stop completely on 2 November. See the Lake Garda ferry before booking a boat-based plan.

What is the rainiest month at Lake Garda?

November, in both halves of the lake. The southern basin averages 113 mm of rain and the north tip around Riva 141 mm, the highest figure anywhere on the lake. It is also the month the passenger boats stop, on 2 November, leaving only the Maderno-Torri car ferry until 12 March. May is the rainiest month by number of wet days in the south, at 13.3, so spring showers are frequent even if lighter.

How hot does Lake Garda get in summer?

July is the hottest month, with a 30-year average high of 29.6°C (85°F) on the southern shore and warm nights of 21.3°C (70°F). Days of 30°C (86°F) or more average 14.2 in July and 12.4 in August in the south, roughly twice the north tip's count. The heat is manageable if you do sights in the morning and water in the afternoon, and Monte Baldo sits about 12°C cooler if you need escape.

Is Lake Garda windy?

Yes, on a daily rhythm. The Peler, a north wind, blows from night into the late morning, usually around 20 knots and up to 30. The Ora, a south wind, starts between about noon and 1 pm and dies at sunset, normally around 15 knots at Malcesine. That predictable afternoon wind is why Torbole is a windsurfing town. A daytime storm can bring a violent wind inversion, so treat a darkening sky as a signal to come off the water. More at Lake Garda windsurfing.

Does it snow at Lake Garda?

Almost never at the shore. Snowfall at lake level in the southern basin averages under half a centimetre in every month, with December at 0.4 cm and February at 0.3 cm, so winter visitors should expect cold rain rather than snow by the water. The exception is the mountain. Monte Baldo at 1,760 m averages about 15.7 cm of snow in January and 18.6 cm in February, and the cable car runs a winter season from 26 December to 21 February.

How warm is the water in Lake Garda?

No tourism board or agency publishes a monthly water temperature for the beaches, so any precise figure circulating online has no official basis. The Coast Guard's advice stands in for the missing numbers: do not underestimate waves and low water temperatures, do not enter the water under a red flag, and stay inside the buoys marking the safe bathing area. Beach guidance is at swimming in Lake Garda.
