Boat Rental Lake Garda: No-Licence Boats, Rules and Prices
Boat rental Lake Garda starts at $143 an hour for a licence-free boat from Sirmione, and the rules change with the shore. Licence-free motorboats leave from Sirmione and other towns, while the narrow north tip is kept for sailing and private motorboats are banned. This page explains the licence rules, the shore limits, where to rent and what a boat costs. If you would rather not take the helm, see Sirmione boat trips and the wider Lake Garda tours range.
Quick answer Price, licence and where you may drive
A self-drive licence-free boat from Sirmione costs $143 for an hour for up to four people, plus a $335.16 (€300) cash deposit. No licence is needed up to 30 kW (40.8 hp). On the Trentino tip, where Riva del Garda and Torbole sit, private motorboats are banned, so the only motorboat there is one hired with a skipper.
Key takeaways
- Keep out of the 300 m band along the shore. You may cross it only straight in, at 3 knots or less, to land or leave. In a few places the band is narrower at 150 m, and bathing zones and reed beds are closed to all boats. See getting around Lake Garda.
- At Riva del Garda no self-drive rental exists. The Riva speedboat with skipper costs $224 per boat for an hour and runs to the Ponale waterfall and the bay of Limone. Read more on the Riva del Garda page.
- No boat and no helm? The Sirmione sunset boat tour costs $34.21 a head for 45 minutes with a flute of Prosecco. Compare it with the rest of the Sirmione boat trips.
- Shared cruises fill the gap where rentals cannot go. The Malcesine historic sailboat cruise costs $45 a person for two hours under sail, and the private boat tour of Isola del Garda is $496.04 per boat.

Do You Need a Boating Licence
For most of the small rental boats on Lake Garda, the answer is no.
Italian law settles it. Article 39 of the Recreational Boating Code says that in inland waters a boating licence is required when the engine exceeds 30 kW, which is 40.8 hp, or above set engine sizes such as 750 cc for a two-stroke carburettor engine or 1,000 cc for a four-stroke outboard. Below those limits no licence is needed, and a jet ski always needs one.
That is why the rental boats on Lake Garda are sold as 40 HP no-licence boats, just under the threshold. You do not arrive cold either: the hirer gives a short briefing at the harbour before departure, covering the controls and the rules of the water. Bring an ID document and a charged phone, since the route runs on a digital GPS map.
If you would rather sit back, the skippered and guided boats are in Lake Garda tours.

Where You Can Self-Drive and Where You Cannot
Lake Garda is split between three regions, and the motorboat rules are not the same in all of them.

The Trentino Motor Ban
The northern tip of the lake, from Riva del Garda to Torbole, lies in the waters of the Autonomous Province of Trento. Provincial law bans motor navigation there, because the north lake is kept for sailing. The law allows a few exceptions: non-scheduled public transport boats, which is the legal form a hire boat with a skipper takes, resident fishermen with engines up to 4.5 kW, towing a disabled boat, and sailing boats using an auxiliary engine to enter or leave harbour or when the wind drops.
So a self-drive rental at Riva or Torbole does not exist, and there is nothing to book. What you can do is hire the motorboat with a skipper, and that is exactly how it is sold. The practical result is simple: if you want to drive your own boat, base yourself on the south or east shore, and treat the north as sailing and windsurf country.

Sirmione and the South
The licence-free card on this page leaves from Largo Goethe in Sirmione. Sirmione sits on a narrow promontory on the south shore, and the boat takes you past the Grottoes of Catullus and the Scaliger Castle from the water. The shore rules are stricter here than elsewhere.
The general 300 m band shrinks to 150 m at the tip of the Sirmione promontory at Punta Grotte, around Isola del Garda and in the gulfs of Salò and the Romantica, so you steer wider in those spots than you would elsewhere. The briefing at the harbour covers it. Arriving by car needs planning, because parking in central Sirmione is tight and the hirer asks you to arrive early.

The East and West Shores
Veneto holds the east shore and Lombardy the west, and both regions apply the same coastal rules, including the 300 m band and the speed limits below. Self-drive renters operate from towns on both shores in season, so you can pick a base first and rent second. Rental companies advertise bases such as Bardolino on the east shore and Manerba del Garda on the west, and the boat you take there runs under the same rules as in Sirmione.
No individual company is named here, because prices and fleets change. What matters for the driver is the same everywhere: no licence under 40.8 hp, the 300 m rule, and a 100 m gap from every ferry. See Bardolino and Salò.

Rules on the Water
The rules below come from the regional lake laws, and the hirer repeats them in the briefing.
Within 300 m of the shore only sail, rowing and pedal boats and windsurf boards may navigate. A motorboat crosses the band only to land or to leave, moving straight in or out at 3 knots or less. Navigation is banned in marked bathing zones, and in reed beds and marked nature or archaeological zones plus 300 m around them.
Keep at least 100 m from ferries and professional fishing boats, and never obstruct a ferry docking. Ask at the briefing where the bathing zones are marked on your stretch of shore. Outside the band the speed limit is 20 knots by day and 5 knots at night under the regional laws, and a local ordinance can set a lower figure.
The table sums up the numbers you need before you cast off.
| Rule | Figure |
|---|---|
| No licence needed below | 30 kW (40.8 hp) |
| Shore band, general | 300 m, motorboats cross only to land or leave |
| Narrowed band (Punta Grotte, Isola del Garda, gulfs of Salò and the Romantica) | 150 m |
| Speed in the band | 3 knots or less, straight in |
| Distance from ferries and fishing boats | 100 m |
| Speed outside the band, day | 20 knots |
| Speed outside the band, night | 5 knots |

What a Boat Costs
Two figures matter, the rental rate and the deposit.
The headline self-drive option is the Sirmione Fiat 500 boat, a 40 HP boat styled after the little car. It costs $143 per boat for one hour, up to four people, which our sum puts at $35.75 each for a full group. A cash deposit of $335.16 (€300) is taken at the harbour and refunded after the boat is checked back in, so bring the cash.
Minimum age to drive is 18. If you want someone else at the wheel, the Riva speedboat with skipper costs $224 per boat for an hour, up to four people, fuel included, and runs out to the Ponale Waterfall and the bay of Limone. The longest private option is the private boat tour of Isola del Garda at $496.04 per boat for 1.5 hours with a guide and Prosecco.
Shared boats cost a fraction: the Sirmione sunset boat tour is $34.21 per person for 45 minutes and the Malcesine historic sailboat cruise is $45 per person for two hours under sail. If you only want to ride, ferry zone fares start at $1.68 (€1.50) on Lake Garda ferries.

Before You Cast Off
A short list of the things that catch first-time drivers out.
Bring cash for the deposit, because the $335.16 (€300) is taken in cash at the harbour and refunded only after the boat is checked for damage. Ask exactly what the deposit covers before you sign, so a scratched hull does not turn into an argument. Ask the briefing to point out where the bathing zones and reed beds sit on your planned route, since both are closed to motorboats and the markers sit low on the water.
Watch for ferries entering Sirmione and the landing piers elsewhere, and hold your 100 m distance even when it feels generous. Take the afternoon wind in the north seriously. The north tip is kept for sailing by law, and the afternoon wind is what the sailing boats come for.
An open 40 HP boat is small. In winter the picture changes: no passenger boats run from 2 November to 12 March, only the Maderno-Torri car ferry. If your dates fall outside the season, browse things to do in Lake Garda instead, or cool off at the Lake Garda beaches.

Boat Rental Lake Garda: Questions
How much does it cost to rent a boat on Lake Garda?
A licence-free self-drive boat from Sirmione costs $143 per boat for one hour, up to four people, which is $35.75 each for a full boat, our sum. A private speedboat with a skipper from Riva costs $224 per boat for an hour. For shared rides, the Sirmione sunset tour is $34.21 per person and the Malcesine sailboat cruise is $45 per person.
Do you need a licence to rent a boat on Lake Garda?
Not below 30 kW, which is 40.8 hp, in inland waters under Italian law. The rental boats are sold at 40 HP, just under the limit, so no licence is needed and a briefing covers the basics. A jet ski always needs a licence, and so does anything over the limit or above the set engine sizes such as 750 cc two-stroke or 1,000 cc four-stroke.
Can you rent a motorboat at the north tip of the lake?
Not to drive yourself. Provincial law bans motor navigation on the Trentino waters of the northern tip, where Riva and Torbole sit, because the north lake is kept for sailing. The exception is a boat hired with a skipper, which is what is on offer there: a private one-hour speedboat for up to four people costs $224 with fuel included.
How close to the shore can a boat go on Lake Garda?
Motorboats stay outside 300 m from the shore. You may cross the band only straight in, at 3 knots or less, to land or to leave. In a few places the band narrows to 150 m, at Punta Grotte on Sirmione, around Isola del Garda and in the gulfs of Salò and the Romantica. Bathing zones and reed beds are closed to boats.
Can you rent a boat in Sirmione?
Yes. The Fiat 500 style boat leaves from Largo Goethe, a 40 HP boat for up to four people with no licence needed, at $143 for an hour. A $335.16 (€300) cash deposit is refunded after the boat is checked. The route passes the Grottoes of Catullus and the Scaliger Castle.
Is there a deposit for boat rental on Lake Garda?
On the Sirmione self-drive boat, yes: a cash deposit of $335.16 (€300), taken at the harbour and refunded after the boat is checked on return. Bring the cash with you and arrive early to sort the paperwork. The skippered charters listed on this page state no deposit, so ask the operator directly for their terms before booking.
