Torbole on Lake Garda
Torbole sits 67 m above sea level at the north end of Lake Garda (see things to do in Lake Garda), in Trentino, a former fishing harbour turned windsurf village at the foot of Monte Baldo, with Nago on the slope above. The whole day turns on the wind: the Peler blows in the morning, the Ora from about noon, and the boats and schools work to that clock. Set it against the other Lake Garda towns or start from what to see around Lake Garda.
Quick answer Torbole at a glance
Torbole is a windsurf town on the north shore of Lake Garda in Trentino, at 67 m above sea level. The ferry from Riva del Garda is fare zone 1, $3.91 (€3.50) one way. Is Torbole worth visiting? Yes if you want wind, water and easy mountain walks. From 2 November to 12 March no passenger boats run on the lake, so plan a bus or car trip then.
Key takeaways
- Learn the wind clock before you book anything. The Peler blows from the north from night into the late morning, the Ora from the south starts around noon and dies at sunset. A two-hour windsurfing course in Torbole costs $95 per person, and lessons are timed around those two winds.
- The little harbour is the heart of Torbole. Fishing boats sit in front of the Casa del Dazio at Via Benaco 26, an Austrian customs house from the early 18th century. A stroll up the Strada di Santa Lucia among olive trees leads towards Nago and a bronze plaque from 1439.
- Boats link Torbole with the rest of the lake in season. Riva to Torbole is zone 1 at $3.91 (€3.50) one way and Malcesine to Torbole is zone 3 at $8.38 (€7.50). Return tickets cost double. From 2 November to 12 March there are no passenger boats anywhere on the lake.
- Beyond the water, walk to the ruins of Castel Penede, find the glacial potholes at the Marmitte dei Giganti in Nago, or hike Monte Brione, a 376 m ridge with more than 20 wild orchid species. For a day on the water with a skipper, a private speedboat tour from Riva del Garda costs $224 per boat for up to 4 people.

A Fishing Harbour at the Foot of Monte Baldo
Torbole is a small port town where the mountains close in and the wind arrives on schedule.
Galleys Over the Mountain
Torbole stands at 67 m on the north-western end of the Baldo chain, with Monte Baldo rising to 2,079 m behind it, close to the mouth of the Sarca river. Nago sits on the hillside above. The town changed hands often: Venice ruled from 1440 to 1510, Austria from 1810 to 1918, and the municipality of Nago-Torbole counts 2,732 residents today.
The strangest event here happened in 1439, during the war between Venice and Milan. The Venetians hauled a fleet of galleys overland from the Adige river, over the mountain and down the Strada di Santa Lucia to Torbole, to attack the Visconti fleet on the lake. A bronze plaque on the road recalls the feat.
It happened on the old road you can still walk today.
Goethe's Stop and the Austrian Years
Goethe stopped at Torbole in September 1786 on his Italian journey and left a longing, passionate picture of the place in his writing. Under Austrian rule from 1810 to 1918, Torbole sat on the empire's southern border. The Casa del Dazio at Via Benaco 26 was built in the early 18th century and still faces the water where goods and people once passed inspection.
Torbole was once a quiet, humble fishing village. Today windsurfers, sailors and water sports fans meet here, drawn by the same winds.

What to See in Torbole and Nago
The sights split between the harbour below and the hillside village of Nago above, connected by an old mule road.
The Little Harbour and the Casa del Dazio
Torbole's harbour is small and still working, with fishing boats pulled up in front of the old customs house. The Casa del Dazio at Via Benaco 26 was built in the early 18th century as the Austrian toll office and the tourism board calls the harbour the selfie spot of every holiday here. The beach in front is Al Cor on Via al Cor, a stony beach with lawn, showers, toilets, a beach bar, lounger rental and lifeguards, and windsurf clubs have their own designated areas there.
If you are sailing yourself, this is where the areas are set aside for boards. Torbole is a stop on the boats between Malcesine and Riva. Come in the early afternoon, when the Ora fills in and the sails come out.
Strada di Santa Lucia
This is the old road between Torbole and Nago, a gentle stroll among olive trees that climbs the hillside above the town. Along the way a bronze plaque marks the 1439 feat, when Venetian galleys were hauled from the Adige over the mountain and down this very road to reach the lake and fight the Visconti fleet. Standing on the slope, the size of the undertaking becomes obvious.
It is the old way up to Nago without a car, and no walking time is published for it, so allow slack. Walk it in the morning before the heat, then come back down for lunch by the harbour. It connects most of what this page describes, so it is worth doing first.

Castel Penede
The ruins of Castel Penede sit about 200 m above Torbole on a rocky spur. The castle was first mentioned in 1210, taken by Venice in 1438 under the condottiero Gattamelata, and burned by French and Spanish troops in 1703. It was fortified again by Austria in 1914 during the First World War, because the border ran close by.
The site is currently listed as temporarily closed, so you see the walls from outside and from the path. That still rewards the climb, since the tourism board calls the spot an observatory onto Lake Garda. Check before you climb whether access has reopened, and wear proper shoes either way.
Combine it with the Strada di Santa Lucia for a half-day loop.
The Marmitte dei Giganti
Near the panoramic road between Nago and Torbole lies a field of glacial potholes, the Marmitte dei Giganti, the giants' kettles. Glacial meltwater falling into crevasses set cobblestones whirling, and they slowly drilled these wells into the rock. Finds from the site date to the 4th and 3rd millennia BC, so the area drew people long before it drew tourists.
It fits naturally into a drive or walk along the panoramic road, paired with Castel Penede above. Bring the kids here if the wind keeps them off the water. It is a good rainy-morning stop when sailing is off.
The Forts of Nago
Above Nago, on the spurs of Monte Baldo, stand the Forti di Nago, built in 1860 and 1861 when this was the Austro-Hungarian border with Italy. The fortifications guarded the passes above the lake In 1861 the upper fort carried eleven cannon. The site is listed as always open, which makes it the easiest historical stop in the area.
Reach them from Nago village on foot after the climb up the Strada di Santa Lucia. If you want more military history, Monte Brione between Torbole and Riva carries Forte Garda, open with guided tours from May to October via the Sentiero della Pace from San Nicolo.

Torbole and the Wind
Torbole exists as a sailing and windsurfing town because of two reliable winds that blow on opposite halves of the day.
How the Wind Works Here
Two winds set the timetable at Torbole. The Peler is a north wind that blows from night into the late morning, usually around 20 knots and able to reach 30. The Ora is a south wind that starts between about noon and 1 pm, runs until sunset and normally measures about 15 knots at Malcesine, growing stronger as it travels north toward the narrow top of the lake. A daytime storm can bring a violent wind inversion, so watch the sky as well as the forecast. Garda Trentino sums it up simply: Peler in the morning, Ora in the afternoon. Match your plans to that clock. The stronger Peler suits experienced riders, the steadier Ora suits improvers, and beginners learn on a course with an instructor and a rescue boat. Torbole sits at the north tip of the lake, where Trentino takes over from the shores of Lombardy and Veneto, and the wind funnels down the fjord under Monte Baldo toward it. For a wider look at wind sports around the lake, see windsurfing on Lake Garda.
The table sets out the lake's two daily winds as the Malcesine tourism office describes them, the clock every school in Torbole works to.
| Wind | When it blows | Strength | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peler, from the north | Night into the late morning | Usually 20 knots, can reach 30 | Experienced riders |
| Ora, from the south | From about noon to 1 pm until sunset | About 15 knots at Malcesine, stronger further north | Improvers on a course |
| Storm inversion | With a daytime storm | Violent and dangerous | Nobody: come off the water |

Learning to Windsurf
A course is the safe way in for a first-timer. The Torbole windsurfing course runs 2 hours for $95 per person with all gear included, board, rig, wetsuit, life jacket and harness. It takes place on water reserved for windsurfing off Torbole, with a rescue RIB on standby. You must be at least 7 years old and able to swim.
Eight course levels go from first tacks to waterstart and freestyle, taught in English, German or Italian. Cancel up to 24 hours ahead for a full refund. The center has only one review so far, so book early in your trip in case you want to repeat it.
Al Cor and the Shore
Al Cor beach on Via al Cor is Torbole's main shore. It is a stony beach with lawn behind it, showers, toilets, a beach bar, lounger rental, lifeguards and marked areas for the windsurf clubs. Bring water shoes, because the stony shore punishes bare feet.
Keep to the club zones when you rig a sail, since the reserved areas keep swimmers and beginners apart. For more shoreline around the lake, see Lake Garda beaches.

Getting to Torbole and Moving On
Torbole has no railway of its own. You arrive by bus, boat or car, and the lake's winter shutdown changes all three plans.
By Boat
The state ferry company runs Torbole on its northern lines. A ride from Riva costs the zone 1 fare of $3.91 (€3.50) one way, and from Malcesine the zone 3 fare of $8.38 (€7.50). Summer run 62 shows how the morning works: Malcesine 8:55, Limone 9:15, Torbole 9:45, Riva 10:00.
Tickets bought on board carry a $1.12 (€1.00) surcharge per passenger, so buy at the desk. Return tickets cost double the one-way fare. From 2 November to 12 March no passenger boats run anywhere on the lake and the only boat is the Maderno-Torri car ferry, so plan a bus or car trip in that window.
Zone fares and passes are explained on the Lake Garda ferry page.
By Bus and On Foot
The nearest railway station is Rovereto, served by Trenitalia, OBB and DB. Regular Trentino Trasporti buses run from there to Torbole, Riva and Arco, and tickets cannot be bought on board, so get one before boarding. From the south you can alight at Desenzano, Peschiera or Verona and continue by ATV bus.
ATV lines 483 and 484 run Riva-Torbole-Malcesine down the east shore, and line 164 links Garda, Bardolino, Lazise, Gardaland, Peschiera and Verona. Guests of partner accommodation get the Garda Guest Card, which covers free buses and lake boats. Monte Brione, 376 m, separates Torbole from Riva del Garda.

How Much Time to Give Torbole
Torbole rewards the wind clock, so decide first whether you come for the morning Peler, the afternoon Ora or neither.
Three Ways to Spend It
An hour or two covers the small harbour, the Casa del Dazio customs house on Via Benaco and the stony Al Cor beach. A half day lets you take a morning windsurf lesson on the reserved water off Al Cor, then eat at the beach bar while the Ora fills in. A full day adds the climb toward the Castel Penede ruins about 200 m above town, the plaque on Strada di Santa Lucia recalling the 1439 galley haul, and a ferry or bus hop to Riva or Malcesine.
Each option suits a different base, and the table that follows sets them side by side.
| Time you have | Do | Skip |
|---|---|---|
| Two hours | The harbour and Casa del Dazio, the Santa Lucia road toward Nago | The water |
| Half a day | Add the Marmitte dei Giganti and the forts above Nago | A lesson |
| A full day | A windsurf course in the morning, the boat to Riva after | Little |
| A winter day | The harbour, Nago and the forts on foot | Boats and lessons |
Do and Don't in Torbole
Do
- Plan your lesson or sail for the morning Peler and the afternoon Ora, because the two winds define what the water will do.
- Buy bus tickets before boarding in Rovereto or at a desk, since Trentino Trasporti sells nothing on board.
- Bring water shoes to Al Cor beach, because the shore is stony and bare feet suffer.
- Ask your hotel about the Garda Guest Card, because partner stays get free buses and lake boats.
- Walk up Strada di Santa Lucia to read the plaque about the 1439 galleys hauled over the mountain from the Adige.
Don't
- Don't count on a passenger boat between 2 November and 12 March, because no passenger boats run anywhere on the lake.
- Don't expect a car ferry between Malcesine and Limone, because the only car ferry on the lake runs between Maderno and Torri.
- Don't pay on board the ferry, because tickets bought on the boat carry a surcharge per passenger.
- Don't walk toward the Castel Penede ruins expecting to enter, because the site is currently listed as temporarily closed.
- Don't ignore a storm warning on the water, because a daytime storm here can bring a violent wind inversion.

The Details That Change a Visit
Each of these changes how you plan a visit, and each ends with the source it comes from.
- In 1439 Venice hauled war galleys from the Adige over the mountain down to Torbole to fight the Visconti fleet, and a bronze plaque on the Santa Lucia road recalls it (Garda Trentino). - The small customs house on the harbour was built by the Austrians in the early 18th century (Garda Trentino). - The Marmitte dei Giganti were cut by whirlpools of glacial meltwater, and finds there date to the 4th-3rd millennium BC (Garda Trentino). - Goethe stopped at Torbole in September 1786, on the same journey that got him questioned as a spy in Malcesine (Wikipedia). - The morning Peler usually blows at 20 knots and can reach 30 (Visit Malcesine).

Torbole on Lake Garda Questions
Is Torbole worth visiting?
Yes, if wind sports or the northern mountains shape your trip. Torbole sits at the narrow Trentino tip of the lake at 67 m above sea level, with reliable morning and afternoon winds, a stony main beach with lifeguards, and Riva del Garda a short ride away across Monte Brione. See Riva del Garda for the neighbouring town.
What are the best things to do in Torbole?
Take a windsurf lesson in the morning, walk to the Casa del Dazio customs house at the harbour, climb to the Castel Penede ruins about 200 m above town, and ride the ferry along the shore. See things to do on Lake Garda for the wider list of lake activities.
Where can I find a map of Torbole?
Torbole sits on the north shore of the lake, east of Riva del Garda and below the Castel Penede ruins. The main beach, Al Cor, lies on Via al Cor and the harbour holds the Casa del Dazio on Via Benaco. The Lake Garda map page places the town against the whole shoreline.
When should I windsurf in Torbole?
Match the wind clock. The Peler north wind blows from night into the late morning and the Ora south wind starts around noon and runs to sunset. The stronger Peler suits experienced riders, and beginners start on a course. The windsurfing page covers conditions and schools around the lake.
How do I get to Torbole without a car?
Take the train to Rovereto, the nearest station, then a Trentino Trasporti bus to Torbole, Riva or Arco, buying the ticket before boarding. In the boating season a ferry also serves Torbole, zone 3 from Malcesine. Details sit on the getting around page.
Is the 1439 galley story in Torbole real?
Yes. In 1439 the Venetians hauled galleys from the Adige river over the mountain to Torbole to fight the Visconti fleet on the lake. A bronze plaque on the Strada di Santa Lucia, the old road between Torbole and Nago, recalls the feat. Venice then held the area from 1440 to 1510, long enough to leave its mark on the shore.
Where Torbole Fits in a Lake Garda Trip
Pairing It With the Next Town
Riva del Garda is the natural partner, 15 minutes away on the summer sample run by zone 1 boat at $3.91 (€3.50) one way, with 376 m Monte Brione between them. Pair Torbole's morning wind with Riva's harbour and the Bastione lift, then add Malcesine by bus on lines 483/484 or a zone 3 ferry at $8.38 (€7.50). A morning lesson in Torbole, an afternoon in Malcesine under the castle, and the boat back north fills one long day.
For a plan that stretches over two or three days, see the 2-day itinerary or the 3-day itinerary, and for a change of pace inland, Arco lies one Trentino Trasporti bus away. For the whole lake, shore by shore, start from what to see in Lake Garda.
