Best Time to Visit Lake Garda: Month by Month

The best time to visit Lake Garda is late May, June and September, when the summer ferry timetable runs and southern highs sit at 22.8-27.3°C (73-81°F). This page gives the switch dates that open and close the lake, the weather month by month, the festivals, and what each season does to room prices. Start with things to do in Lake Garda and see the rest of Lake Garda attractions too.

Quick answer The best months, the switch dates and the price swing

The best time to visit Lake Garda is late May, June and September, when the summer ferry timetable runs (16 May to 4 October) and southern highs sit at 22.8-27.3°C (73-81°F). July and August bring the heat, 14.2 and 12.4 days of 30°C or more in the south, and the highest room rates. From 2 November to 12 March no passenger boats run and the Monte Baldo cable car closes, so a car-free winter visit stays on one shore. Spring and autumn are cheaper and quieter but the door dates matter.

Key takeaways

  • The season sets the room price, not the sights. The median rate Google Hotels returned for a Wednesday night for two in Sirmione was $225.67 (€202) in mid-July, $155.29 (€139) in mid-May and $81.56 (€73) in mid-November. Compare towns on where to stay.
  • The switches decide the trip. Summer ferries run 16 May to 4 October, passenger boats stop 2 November to 12 March, and the Monte Baldo cable car closes 2 November to 25 December between its summer and winter seasons. Book Monte Baldo cable car tickets for the right season.
  • In any season a first boat ride is cheap. The 25-minute Sirmione peninsula cruise costs $13 per person and runs from the small harbour in front of Sirmione castle whenever the boats are operating.
  • The weather varies less than the transport does. Southern highs run from 8.3°C (47°F) in January to 29.6°C (85°F) in July, see Lake Garda weather. Pick the month for the doors you want open before booking one of the hotels on Lake Garda.

The Short Answer by Season

Two things decide when to come: what is running on the water and how much a room costs.

The Pick: Late May, June and September

Late May, June and September are our pick. The summer ferry timetable runs from 16 May to 4 October, so the full boat network crosses the lake every day. The Monte Baldo cable car is on its summer season from 4 April to 1 November, the Sirmione castle and Grottoes open Tuesday to Sunday, and Isola del Garda visits run from 29 March to October.

Southern highs sit at 22.8-27.3°C (73-81°F), warm enough for the beach without the July heat. September averages 24.3°C (76°F) with 92 mm of rain, and the Grape and Wine Festival in Bardolino falls in the same weeks. Three days is enough for a first trip, see Lake Garda in 3 days.

When to Avoid

No month is closed. From 2 November to 12 March, though, no passenger boats run on the lake and the only crossing is the Maderno-Torri car ferry, so a car-free visitor sees one shore and needs buses or a hired car to move around. July and August bring 14.2 and 12.4 days of 30°C or more in the southern basin, the Sirmione pedestrian afternoons, and the highest room medians of the sample.

If you must come in that window, book early and plan mornings. Plan the mechanics of the trip on getting around Lake Garda.

Spring: March, April and May

Spring opens the lake one door at a time, so check the dates before you book.

March

March averages a 14.5°C (58°F) high and 64 mm of rain in the south. The passenger boats restart on 13 March on the spring timetable. Parco Sigurtà opens on 7 March, Isola del Garda visits begin on 29 March, and Heller Garden reopens after its winter closure ends on 1 March.

The Monte Baldo cable car is still shut: its winter season ends on 21 February and the summer season only starts on 4 April. The lake is quiet and cheap, and the gardens are the reason to come. Plan a garden day at Parco Sigurtà.

April

April averages 18.4°C (65°F), 88 mm of rain and 12.3 wet days in the south. The Monte Baldo cable car starts its summer season on 4 April, so the mountain is back on the list. In the north the Bike Festival in Riva marks the start of the outdoor season.

More than 50,000 tulips bloom on Bardolino's lakefront. Sirmione's shuttle bus from Colombare runs from April to October, which helps with the traffic restrictions. The top station still averages about 4.9 cm of snow in April.

See the season on Monte Baldo and plan rides on Lake Garda cycling.

May

May averages 22.8°C (73°F) in the south, the swimming weather is close, but it is the wettest month by wet days, 13.3, with 103 mm. The summer ferry timetable starts on 16 May and the full boat network runs from then. At the end of May Bardolino holds the Palio del Chiaretto, its rosé festival on the lakefront.

Rain is a risk, so pick indoor-capable plans. The Bardolino vineyard tasting costs $40, lasts 1.5 hours and proceeds rain or shine, which makes it a good rainy-afternoon bet. Read more on Bardolino.

Summer: June, July and August

Summer has everything open and the biggest crowds, plus the highest prices.

June

June averages a 27.3°C (81°F) high in the southern basin, with 7.7 days of 30°C or more, and 85 mm of rain. The whole lake is running: the full summer ferry timetable, the cable car to Monte Baldo, the castles and the beaches. Evenings are long, which suits the Sirmione sunset boat tour at $34.21, a 45-minute loop with a glass of Prosecco that needs a minimum of 10 participants to run.

Book rooms ahead for the summer months. Compare beaches on Lake Garda beaches.

July

July is the hottest month, a 29.6°C (85°F) average high with lows of 21.3°C and 14.2 days of 30°C or more. It is also the most expensive: the median rate Google Hotels returned for a mid-July Wednesday night for two was $225.67 (€202) in Sirmione and $222.32 (€199) in Riva del Garda. The Sirmione castle and Grottoes open at 8:30 on the hours the Ministry lists, Tuesday to Sunday, so go at opening time and check before you go. The Gardaland one-day ticket costs $50, is fixed date and non-refundable, and the park runs event seasons, so check the park calendar.

See Gardaland.

August

August averages 29.2°C (85°F) in the south with 12.4 days of 30°C or more. The north tip runs cooler, with about 7.4 hot days, and its highs average 27.9°C (82°F). Every afternoon the Ora, a south wind, starts between about noon and 1 pm and dies at sunset, at Malcesine normally around 15 knots.

That rhythm is the basis of the sailing and windsurfing at the north end. Read Lake Garda windsurfing and Riva del Garda.

Autumn: September, October and November

Autumn keeps the summer systems running through early October, then shuts them down fast.

September

September averages 24.3°C (76°F) in the south with 92 mm of rain and only 1.3 days of 30°C or more. The boats stay on the summer timetable until 4 October, so the full ferry network, the cable car and the island visits all still work. Bardolino's Grape and Wine Festival, held since 1929, falls between September and October.

The north tip is a degree cooler at 23.7°C (75°F) but wetter, with 112 mm. Read about the wines on Bardolino wine.

October

October averages 19.1°C (66°F) and 99 mm of rain in the south. The autumn ferry timetable starts on 5 October, and on the Desenzano-Peschiera-Riva line several runs are daily only until 11 October, so check the timetable before relying on a crossing. The Monte Baldo cable car runs to 1 November.

In the north, autumn is climbing season with the Rock Master in Arco, and the Mese del Gusto food month runs alongside it. Read more on Arco.

November

November averages 13.1°C (56°F) and is the wettest month, 113 mm. The lake closes in a single week: passenger boats stop on 2 November, the Monte Baldo cable car closes the same day for maintenance, Heller Garden closes on 1 November and Parco Sigurtà on 15 November. Room medians fall to $81.56 (€73) in Sirmione for a mid-November Wednesday night.

The Christmas markets in Arco and Riva open from 13 November, which gives the north a reason to visit. Winter costs and plans live on Lake Garda in winter.

Source: Garda Trentino seasons, Heller Garden, Garda Trentino Christmas market in Arco.

Winter: December, January and February

Winter is quiet, cheap and boatless, with a short mountain season on Monte Baldo.

December

December averages a 9.0°C (48°F) high in the south. The Christmas markets carry the month: Arco, Riva del Garda, Canale di Tenno and Rango all run their stalls through the weeks to the new year, with Riva's food village in the two lakeside squares. The Monte Baldo cable car reopens on 26 December for its winter season.

Malcesine castle opens every day from 5 December to 6 January, 10:30-17:00, which is unusual for winter. Read Malcesine castle.

January

January is the coldest month, an 8.3°C (47°F) average high, about 4.9 frosty nights, and the least rain of the year, 53 mm. Only the Maderno-Torri car ferry crosses the lake, so a car-free visitor sticks to one shore and its buses. The Sirmione spa is the indoor answer: the SPA & Thermal Garden opens every day, Sunday to Thursday 9:00-22:00 and Friday to Saturday to 24:00, and booking is always required online.

Check bus connections before relying on a route. Read Terme di Sirmione.

February

February averages a 10.5°C (51°F) high and 61 mm of rain. The Monte Baldo cable car's winter season ends on 21 February, and the ski area of about 10 km of slopes runs on natural snow only, so a poor snow winter means thin skiing. Malcesine castle opens weekends only, 10:30-17:00.

The passenger boats do not restart until 13 March, so movement stays by road. It is a good month for a cheap town base with day trips by car or bus. Rain plans live on a rainy day at Lake Garda.

The Dates That Switch the Lake On and Off

The lake does not open and close all at once, and that is what surprises first-time visitors.

Openings are staggered from March to May and most closures come in the first days of November, so the month you pick decides which doors are shut. The passenger boats restart on 13 March, Parco Sigurtà opens on 7 March, Isola del Garda visits begin on 29 March and the Monte Baldo cable car starts its summer season on 4 April. On the way out, the boats, the cable car and Heller Garden stop on 1-2 November and Sigurtà on 15 November.

The table below lines up the season dates side by side so you can match your trip to what will actually be running.

What the Season Does to Room Prices

The season moves room prices far more than it moves any ticket price.

The figures below are the median rates Google Hotels returned for one Wednesday night for two adults, in mid-July, mid-May and mid-November, in Sirmione, Riva del Garda and Bardolino. They are small samples of what one search returned, not an official price list, and rates move daily, so treat them as a shape rather than a promise. The pattern is clear: in Sirmione a July night ran close to three times a November night, and May sat in between.

Entry tickets and ferry fares do not change with the season, so the season's real cost is the bed. Compare towns on Lake Garda hotels and budget the rest on Lake Garda costs.

The Best Time by Kind of Trip

Match the month to what you actually came to do.

Swimming

June to early September is the swimming window, with southern highs of 27.3-29.6°C (81-85°F) and warm nights. No official monthly lake water temperature average is published for the bathing beaches, so the figure you want does not exist. The Coast Guard's advice covers the gap: do not enter the water when the red flag is flying, do not go beyond the buoys, and do not underestimate waves and low water temperatures.

June and September give you the same water with fewer people on the sand. Pick a spot on Lake Garda beaches.

Hiking and Cycling

April to June and September to October give cool mornings and workable trails. The Monte Baldo cable car's summer season runs 4 April to 1 November, which frames the mountain season exactly, and the north tip's Bike Festival opens the outdoor calendar in spring. For flat miles on two wheels, the full-day e-bike rental costs $39, runs from Peschiera and suits riders at least 155 cm tall.

The Ponale path from Riva is listed easy but is an alpine trail prone to rockfall, so treat it with respect. Route ideas on Lake Garda hiking.

Wine and Food

Come twice or pick your festival. The end of May brings the Palio del Chiaretto, Bardolino's rosé festival on the lakefront. September and October bring the Grape and Wine Festival, held since 1929, plus the Mese del Gusto food month in the north alongside the Rock Master climbing event.

Spring adds more than 50,000 tulips on the Bardolino lakefront, which pairs well with a tasting. Olio Garda DOP, the lake's protected olive oil, has been recognised since 1997. Eat your way through it on Lake Garda food.

Families

June and September are the sweet spot for families: the theme park, the boats and the beaches are all running, but the heat and the peak rates of July and August are not. A free shuttle runs to Gardaland from Peschiera station every 30 minutes, and the Gardaland one-day ticket at $50 is fixed date and non-refundable, so choose the day carefully. On the water, the four-hour cruise with a stop in Sirmione costs $61 and includes a two-hour stop, but it is not suitable for pregnant women or wheelchair users.

Plan the week on Lake Garda with kids.

Mountains From the Lake

Summer is the usual window for a long mountain day. The Dolomites day from the lake costs $95, runs 10-12 hours, includes hotel pickup and drop-off, and takes in Pordoi Pass and Ortisei, with an optional cable car at Pordoi Pass for $31.28 (€28) extra. Group size depends on the option, up to 7 people small or up to 55 standard. The route may change with weather and traffic, so check the date picker for the day.

Read the full plan on the Dolomites from Lake Garda.

Best Time to Visit Questions

What is the best month to visit Lake Garda?

June and September are the strongest months. Both sit inside the summer ferry timetable (16 May to 4 October) and the Monte Baldo cable car summer season (4 April to 1 November), with southern highs of 27.3°C (81°F) and 24.3°C (76°F). Late May works too if you accept the wettest weeks of the year. Room prices run below the July peak. Start planning on things to do in Lake Garda.

What is the rainiest month at Lake Garda?

November is the wettest by volume in the southern basin, 113 mm. May has the most wet days, 13.3, with 103 mm. The north tip is wetter than the south in every month, about 1,356 mm a year against 981 mm. These are 30-year averages, not forecasts. November is also the month the boats and the cable car close, so read the winter picture on Lake Garda in winter.

Is May a good time to visit Lake Garda?

Yes, especially from mid-month. The summer ferry timetable starts on 16 May, the cable car has been running since 4 April, and the Palio del Chiaretto rosé festival closes the month in Bardolino. The trade-off is rain: May averages 13.3 wet days, the most of the year, and 103 mm. The median rate Google Hotels returned in Sirmione was $155.29 (€139) for a mid-May Wednesday night. See where to stay.

Is October a good time to visit Lake Garda?

Early October, yes. The boats run the summer timetable until 4 October, the cable car runs to 1 November, and the Grape and Wine Festival season continues in Bardolino. From 5 October the autumn timetable applies and some runs are daily only until 11 October, so check ferry times. The southern high averages 19.1°C (66°F) with 99 mm of rain. Winter alternatives are on Lake Garda in winter.

When do the Lake Garda ferries stop for winter?

Passenger boats stop from 2 November to 12 March. In that window the only service is the Maderno-Torri car ferry, which takes 30 minutes to cross. A spring timetable runs 13 March to 25 March before the summer season, and the summer timetable runs 16 May to 4 October. A car-free winter visitor should plan around buses and one shore. Fares and timetables are on the Lake Garda ferry.

When is Lake Garda cheapest?

Mid-November. The median rate Google Hotels returned for a Wednesday night for two was $81.56 (€73) in Sirmione, $87.14 (€78) in Riva del Garda and $138.53 (€124) in Bardolino. The catch is transport: no passenger boats run from 2 November to 12 March, so a car helps. Read the full cost picture on Lake Garda costs.

Is August too hot for Lake Garda?

It is hot but workable. The southern basin averages a 29.2°C (85°F) high with 12.4 days of 30°C or more, while the north tip averages 27.9°C (82°F) with about 7.4 hot days. Basing in the north, swimming in the morning and sailing in the afternoon Ora wind makes it comfortable. The price is the year's densest crowds and peak room rates. Compare bases on Sirmione or Malcesine.
