Lake Garda Rainy Day Plans: Spas, Museums and Indoor Stops

A Lake Garda rainy day does not have to be a lost day. The lake is 51.60 km long, so the weather at your base decides everything, and this page sorts the indoor options by shore so you stay close to your hotel. The strongest single plan is the thermal spa in Sirmione, and there are museums, castles, an aquarium and one waterfall that rain cannot spoil. For the wider picture, see what to see in Lake Garda and the full list of things to do in Lake Garda.

Quick answer Where to go when it rains, by shore

On a rainy day at Lake Garda the strongest plan is the thermal spa in Sirmione, open every day from 9:00 with pools at 34-36°C and 5-hour weekday entry from $49.16 (€44). On the south shore add the Grottoes museum in Sirmione and the Rambotti museum in Desenzano. On the east shore there are the Bardolino museums and Malcesine castle. On the west shore sits Il Vittoriale at Gardone, and near Riva in the north the Varone waterfall runs in any weather.

Key takeaways

  • With children, the Gardaland SEA LIFE aquarium ticket at $10 is an open date entry, so you can decide on the morning itself. The ticket is non-refundable, so wait until rain is certain before you buy it.
  • If you want to cook instead of queue, the cooking class in Garda town at $111 lasts 3 hours and includes hotel pickup, pasta, tiramisu and wine. It is adults only.
  • In the north, Cascata del Varone is a waterfall inside a cave gorge that works in any weather. The shop sells waterproofs, and it closes only on 25 December.
  • Rain totals differ a lot along the lake, so check Lake Garda weather before choosing which shore to base on. The full guide to hotels on Lake Garda explains how the three shores split the lake.

Rainy-Day Stops at a Glance

Indoor Options by Shore

Lake Garda is long, so the first question is which shore your hotel sits on, not what to see.

The Short List

The table below compares the main indoor stops on each shore with their published adult price and opening pattern, taken from each operator's own page. Use it to pick two stops near your base instead of driving the length of the lake in the rain. South means Sirmione, Desenzano and the theme park area at Castelnuovo.

East means Bardolino, Lazise, Garda and Malcesine. West means Salò, Toscolano and Gardone Riviera. North means Riva del Garda, Torbole and Arco.

Prices are the full adult gate price where one is printed.

Thermal Water in Sirmione

The spa is the one rainy day plan that works in any season, so it comes first.

Why There Is Hot Water Under a Cold Lake

The sulphurous salso-bromo-iodic water that fills the Sirmione pools rises from a spring linked to the Fonte Boiola, known since the 16th century. The problem was depth: the spring emerges 19 m below lake level, so for centuries it could not be used. Only when it was piped up at the end of the 19th century did bathing begin, and the water reaches 69°C at the source.

Today Terme di Sirmione runs two centres. Treatments happen at the Therapy District in Colombare. The SPA & Thermal Garden at Terme Catullo, in the old town, covers over 10,000 m2 of indoor and outdoor thermal pools, saunas and a lakeside jetty.

Start planning at Terme di Sirmione.

Tickets and Rules

The SPA & Thermal Garden opens every day: Sunday to Thursday 9:00-22:00, Friday and Saturday 9:00-24:00. Booking is always required through the online portal, and entry is not guaranteed without one. You can cancel up to 48 hours ahead and reschedule within 6 months.

A 5-hour entry costs $49.16 (€44) Monday to Thursday and $64.80 (€58) Friday to Sunday, a 2-hour short entry $27.93 (€25). The table below sets out the main admissions and the pool temperatures. Pack a swimsuit and slippers, both mandatory from the changing area, and leave metal jewellery off, because the water oxidises it.

There are no safes for valuables.

South Shore Indoors

The south has the two best small museums on the lake and the aquarium near Peschiera.

The Grottoes Museum, Sirmione

Inside the Roman ruins at the tip of the Sirmione peninsula, the archaeological museum opened in 1999 and holds finds from the pile dwellings of the southern shore and from Roman Sirmione. The site ticket costs $11.17 (€10) and the payment desk is cards only, no cash. The Ministry page lists Tuesday to Saturday 8:30-17:00 and Sunday 8:30-14:00, closed Mondays, but does not say whether those are summer or winter hours, so check before you go.

The ruins themselves are open air. Do the museum first, then walk the terraces when the rain eases. Plan the visit at the Grottoes of Catullus.

Rambotti Archaeology Museum, Desenzano

Opened in 1990 on the lakefront at Via Anelli 42, the Rambotti museum is named after Desenzano's first mayor. Its two headline objects are the oldest plough in the world and a dugout canoe. Entry is $7.82 (€7) full, and free for everyone on the first Sunday of the month.

In winter the museum closes on Mondays, and in summer it closes on Mondays and Wednesdays, so a rainy Tuesday is your safest bet. Combine it with the town centre at Desenzano del Garda.

SEA LIFE and Gardaland

The aquarium sits at Gardaland in Castelnuovo del Garda, reached by the park's free shuttle from Peschiera station. The Gardaland SEA LIFE aquarium ticket costs $10, is an open date valid any day in the season, and covers 40 tanks and an underwater tunnel. Strollers are not allowed inside, free baby carriers are available at the entrance for infants under 9 kg. The Gardaland one-day ticket costs $50, is fixed date and non-refundable, so do not buy it for a rainy forecast, and the park runs event seasons, so check the park calendar. Details at Gardaland.

East Shore Indoors

From Lazise to Malcesine, the east shore mixes tastings, museums and one big castle.

Bardolino's Museums

The town lists four indoor stops close together: the Olive Oil Museum, the Wine Museum, the medieval church of San Severo and the Sisan museum of the lake's birds and fishing. The town posts no hours or prices for them online, so ask the Bardolino tourist office on arrival. The wines behind the museum are on Bardolino wine.

For a tasting that ignores the weather, the Bardolino vineyard tasting at $40 runs rain or shine, and the Lazise vineyard tasting at $47 is a sit-down session with six wines. Both link to Bardolino.

Malcesine Castle

The castle keeps two good rainy-day rooms. The natural history museum of Monte Baldo and Garda fills the Casermetta, the old guard house, renovated in 2008 with a multimedia layout over nine rooms. The Sala Goethe sits in the Austrian powder magazine: Goethe was questioned here as a spy in September 1786 after sketching the castle, and the room now holds his images of the lake and his bust.

Entry is $7.82 (€7) for adults and $3.35 (€3) for children 6-13. It opens daily until 31 October, then weekends, then daily 5 December to 6 January. Everything else on the hill is at Malcesine castle.

Museo del Lago, Cassone

Four kilometres south of Malcesine, at the mouth of the Aril, a river named as the shortest in Italy, sits the lake's fishing museum. Entry is free, which makes it an easy stop on a wet morning. Hours are tight: April to October it opens Tuesday to Sunday 10:00-12:00 and 15:00-18:00, from November to March Sundays only at the same times, so a rainy Sunday is the one winter chance.

You can walk or cycle there on the lakeshore path. More of the town at Malcesine.

West Shore Indoors

The west shore between Salò and Gardone has the lake's two strangest museums.

Il Vittoriale degli Italiani, Gardone

The poet Gabriele d'Annunzio lived here from 1922 until his death in 1938, with the cruiser Puglia set into the hillside. The house and gardens are open all year, and tickets are sold through the foundation's own online shop, where the prices and hours live. The estate is big enough that rain changes the plan rather than ending it. The guided Vittoriale visit at $48 covers 2 hours with a licensed guide and includes the park and two museums, so the outdoor part has a purpose even in drizzle.

Start at Il Vittoriale degli Italiani.

Museo della Carta, Toscolano

Upstream from Salò, the Valle delle Cartiere is the paper-mill valley where the river once powered mills making parchment and paper. Entry is $8.94 (€8) full and $6.70 (€6) reduced, free under 6. Hours are seasonal: daily 10:00-18:00 from 28 March to 11 October, then Saturdays and Sundays only from 17 October to 8 November, and nothing printed after that, so call ahead in late autumn and winter.

The nearest town to plan around is Salò.

The North Tip in the Rain

The north tip is the wettest part of the lake, so it also has the best bad-weather stops.

The Varone waterfall falling inside its rock gorge near Riva del Garda, Lake Garda, Italy

Cascata del Varone

A waterfall dropping 98 m inside a vertical cave gorge, opened to visitors in 1874, with two viewpoints 40 m apart linked by a paved path and about 70 long steps to the upper cave. Entry is $7.82 (€7) for adults, family tickets for 2+2 cost $26.81 (€24), sold on site only with no reservation. It opens every day except 25 December, 9:00-19:00 in May-August and 10:00-17:00 in winter.

Rain changes little here, since the gorge is spray and rock anyway, and the shop sells cellophane waterproofs. Bring shoes with grip. The full visit plan is at Cascata del Varone.

The Rocca fortress of Riva del Garda, home of the MAG museum, Lake Garda, Italy

MAG Museo Alto Garda, Riva

Riva del Garda's museum sits inside the Rocca, the fortress at Piazza C. Battisti 3/A. Entry is $5.59 (€5) full, $4.47 (€4) reduced, $11.17 (€10) for a family of two adults with minors, and free under 15. The Apponale tower costs $2.23 (€2), and the Museum Pass $24.58 (€22). One warning: the museum's own hours page is not current, so check the current opening before you walk over.

What Rain Does to Your Bookings

The cancellation rules differ sharply between boats, cable cars and tastings.

Boats and the Cable Car

Monte Baldo cable car tickets are valid one day and are not refunded for bad weather or a wind shutdown, so buy at the station on the day instead of booking ahead, at Monte Baldo cable car tickets. The Sirmione boat trips work differently: the 25-minute peninsula cruise at $13 sends you an SMS and offers a refund or a new date if weather cancels the run. The Malcesine sailboat cruise is cancelled with a refund in thunderstorms, heavy rain or strong wind, so your money is safe there.

For the wider picture on every weather policy, see Lake Garda tours.

A Day Off the Lake

Two bookable options fill a washed-out day. The cooking class in Garda town at $111 lasts 3 hours, includes hotel pickup and drop-off, and ends with the pasta and tiramisu you cooked, with wine. It is adults only and capped at 12 people. If the rain has settled in for good, the Verona day trip from the lake at $73 runs 8-10 hours by coach with a guided walk.

Plan it at Verona from Lake Garda.

When Rain Is Most Likely

Rain is not spread evenly over the lake, and the month matters as much as the shore.

Rain by Month, North Against South

The table below lists rain totals and wet days by month at both ends of the lake, from 30-year averages, so they describe a normal year rather than a forecast. In the south, May has the most wet days at 13.3, and November the most rain at 113 mm. The north tip is wetter in every month, with July at 114 mm against 74 mm in the south, about 1.5 times the summer rain.

That is why a Riva or Torbole base needs one more indoor plan than a Sirmione base. Compare the months at the best time to visit.

Rainy Day Questions

What can you do at Lake Garda when it rains?

Pick a stop near your base rather than crossing the lake. The south has the Sirmione spa, the Grottoes museum and the Rambotti museum in Desenzano. The east has the Bardolino museums and Malcesine castle. The west has Il Vittoriale and the paper museum at Toscolano, and the north has the Varone waterfall and the MAG museum. More options at things to do in Lake Garda.

What is the rainiest month at Lake Garda?

By 30-year averages, November brings the most rain in the south, 113 mm, and the north tip peaks in November too at 141 mm. May has the most wet days in the south, 13.3 a month. The north is wetter than the south in every month, so a northern base needs one extra indoor plan. Details at the best time to visit.

What can you do in Sirmione when it is raining?

Sirmione has the strongest rainy day plan on the lake. The thermal spa opens every day from 9:00 with indoor and outdoor pools, and every entry needs an online booking. Add the archaeological museum at the Grottoes of Catullus, closed Mondays, and the castle, also closed Mondays. Both sights and practical details at the Grottoes of Catullus.

Is there an indoor activity for children at Lake Garda on a rainy day?

The SEA LIFE aquarium next to Gardaland runs 40 tanks and an underwater tunnel, and the $10 ticket is an open date valid any day in the season, so you can buy it when rain is certain. Note that strollers are not allowed inside. For more family plans, see the guide to Lake Garda with kids.

Are mountain lift tickets refunded for bad weather?

No. Tickets are valid one day and are not refunded for bad weather, a wind shutdown or technical faults, and an online booking slot does not guarantee departure at the chosen time. The safe habit is to buy at the valley station on the morning itself. Read the full terms at Monte Baldo cable car tickets.

Is the waterfall near Riva worth seeing in the rain?

Yes. The water drops 98 m inside a cave gorge where you get spray in any weather, and the site stays open every day except 25 December. The path is paved but has about 70 long steps to the upper cave, and the souvenir shop sells cellophane waterproofs. Tickets are $7.82 (€7) on site only. Plan it at Cascata del Varone.

Do Lake Garda boat tours run in the rain?

It depends on the tour. The Sirmione peninsula cruise at $13 sends an SMS and offers a refund or a new date if weather cancels the run. The Malcesine sailboat cruise is cancelled with a refund in thunderstorms, heavy rain or strong wind. Passenger ferries stop for the season from 2 November to 12 March. See the Lake Garda ferry for the season dates.
