Mantua From Lake Garda: Gonzaga Palaces, River Lakes and the Way There

Mantua from Lake Garda is about an hour and a half by train, and the reward is one of Italy's great Renaissance cities. Mantua and nearby Sabbioneta became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. The city sits on three artificial lakes fed by the Mincio, the same river that leaves Lake Garda at Peschiera. Two Gonzaga palaces, a Mantegna fresco cycle and a boat on the lakes fill a day. Compare it with other day trips from Lake Garda and the rest of things to do at Lake Garda.

Quick answer How to get there, what to see, which day

By train from Desenzano to Mantova takes 1 h 28 min with a change at Verona for $8.60 (€7.70) in a sample weekday timetable. From Peschiera it is 1 h 19 min with the same change. The day is two palaces, Sant'Andrea and the lake cruise. Pick any day but Monday for the Ducal Palace, and give Tuesday morning to the Ducal Palace because Palazzo Te opens late on Tuesdays. High-speed fares are dynamic, so book early or travel regional.

Getting to Mantua From the Lake

Mantua has its own station, Mantova. Every route from the lake changes at Verona Porta Nuova.

The train is the practical way. In a sample weekday timetable Desenzano to Mantova takes 1 h 28 min with a change at Verona and costs $8.60 (€7.70), with departures at :49 past the hour. From Peschiera del Garda it is 1 h 19 min with the same change for $7.21 (€6.45), all-regional.

The Verona Porta Nuova to Mantova leg is a 46-minute regional train at $5.25 (€4.70), hourly at :31 in the sample. Coming back, Mantova to Peschiera takes 1 h 27 min for $7.21 (€6.45), with departures at :29 past the hour until 20:29. These are sample weekday figures, and high-speed fares are dynamic, so check the Trenitalia journey planner for your date.

If you change at Verona you can also break the journey and see the Arena, since Verona Porta Nuova sits 19 minutes from Peschiera by regional train at $4.52 (€4.05).

From the East and North Shores

There is no station at Garda town, Bardolino or Lazise. ATV Verona runs line 164 from Garda through Bardolino, Lazise and Gardaland to Peschiera, and from there the train to Mantova is 1 h 19 min with a change at Verona. Check the current timetable on atv.verona.it before travel.

From the north it is longer: Riva del Garda has no railway station, so take the Trentino Trasporti bus to Rovereto and the train from Rovereto to Verona, 46-70 minutes for $7.76 (€6.95), then continue to Mantova. From Bardolino the line 164 bus to Peschiera is the easiest first leg. Allow the whole morning for the northern route.

By Car

Mantua is reachable by road from the whole lake, but no drive time is given here. The useful advice is at the destination: leave the car outside the historic centre and walk in. For a rental, see Lake Garda car rental.

The River That Links the Lake and the City

Mantua's lakes are not natural. They are made of the Mincio, and the Mincio begins at Peschiera, at the south-east corner of Lake Garda.

The Mincio Cycle Path

The Mantova-Peschiera cycle path runs 43.5 km along the Mincio embankments inside the Mincio Regional Park, passing through Goito, Marmirolo and Volta Mantovana. Side trips lead to the castles of Ponti sul Mincio and Monzambano, to Castellaro Lagusello, itself UNESCO-listed, and to the village of Borghetto. Bosco Fontana, once a Gonzaga hunting reserve, sits a few kilometres before Mantua.

If the full distance sounds heavy, the Peschiera e-bike tour to Borghetto covers the first stretch for $89 over 4 hours, with a one-hour break in the village. Close to the path, Parco Giardino Sigurtà at Valeggio costs $21.67 for admission. Riders doing the whole path one way can take the train back from Mantova, with departures at :29 past the hour until 20:29.

More routes are on Lake Garda cycling and the park's own pages at parcodelmincio.it.

The Three Lakes by Boat

The fastest way to understand Mantua is from the water. The Mantua river cruise lasts 105 minutes for $20 and leaves from the Pontile B1 pier on Viale Mincio, in front of the Castle of St George. It sails Lago di Mezzo and Lago Inferiore past the Gonzaga palace, glides through the WWF-protected Vallazza wetland with its herons, coypus and water lilies, and passes through a Vincian water lift, a lock built on Leonardo's principle of communicating vessels that joins two different water levels. If the lift is under maintenance the boat goes straight into the Mincio instead, with the same duration.

Commentary is in Italian. The boat is wheelchair accessible, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before. Every other bookable outing around the water is compared on Lake Garda tours.

Tours Along the Mincio

None of these cards carries you from the lake to Mantua. The cruise is in Mantua itself, the e-bike ride covers the first stretch of the river path from Peschiera, and the garden sits on the Mincio at Valeggio.

What to See in Mantua in One Day

Two palaces, one basilica and the lakefront will fill a day comfortably. Both palaces charge $20.11 (€18), so decide which matters more to you before adding a third site.

The Ducal Palace and the Camera degli Sposi

The Palazzo Ducale was the seat of the Lords of Mantua from 1308, first the Bonacolsi and then the Gonzaga. It grew into a complex of over 35,000 square metres with more than 500 rooms, 7 gardens and 8 courtyards. The prize is the Camera degli Sposi, frescoed by Andrea Mantegna for Ludovico III Gonzaga in a tower of the Castle of St George looking over Lago di Mezzo.

The palace closes every Monday and opens Tuesday to Sunday. The full ticket, including the Castle of San Giorgio and the Camera degli Sposi, is $20.11 (€18). Camera degli Sposi entry is quota-limited and booked on mantovaducale.coopculture.it, and the booked group enters from the castle in Piazza Castello.

Book the slot before you travel, because the quota can fill.

Palazzo Te

Palazzo Te is Giulio Romano's mannerist masterpiece, in the suburbs of Mantua. It opens Monday 9:00-19:00, Tuesday 13:00-19:00, and Wednesday to Sunday 9:00-19:00, with last entry one hour before closing and a single closure on 25 December. The full ticket is $20.11 (€18), with a concession of $14.52 (€13) for Verona Card holders and for Parco Giardino Sigurtà and Vittoriale ticket holders, $8.94 (€8) for ages 12-18, free under 12, and a family ticket at $50.27 (€45).

One ticket also opens MACA and the Tempio di Leon Battista Alberti. If you hold a Verona Card from a Verona day trip, bring it, and the same works with a Vittoriale visit.

The facade and bell tower of the Basilica of Sant'Andrea in Mantua, Italy

Sant'Andrea

The Basilica of Sant'Andrea was begun in 1472 for Ludovico III Gonzaga to designs by Leon Battista Alberti, and it took 328 years to finish. The facade follows Alberti's scheme based on the ancient Arch of Trajan, while an earlier bell tower of 1414 was kept. Sant'Andrea is one of the sites covered by the Mantova e Sabbioneta Card, which includes the Sant'Andrea audio guide, so the card holders hear the story of the building as they walk.

It looms over Piazza Mantegna and makes the natural third stop of the day.

The City of Virgil, Monteverdi and Rigoletto

Mantua is the nearest town to Virgil's birthplace, and a statue of the poet stands in the Piazza Virgiliana. Music runs just as deep. Claudio Monteverdi premiered his opera L'Orfeo here in 1607, at the Gonzaga court.

Shakespeare put Romeo in Mantua too: he is exiled from Verona to this city, and hears of Juliet's death here. Verdi set Rigoletto in Mantua, after the Austro-Hungarian authorities in Venice made him move the action from France. None of it needs a ticket.

The statue in Piazza Virgiliana stands in a lakeside park, so the literary city costs you nothing but a walk.

Tickets, Closures and the City Card

The week splits the city, so the day you pick decides what you can see.

The Ducal Palace closes every Monday, while Palazzo Te is open Monday 9:00-19:00. On Tuesdays the order flips in the morning: Palazzo Te opens only at 13:00, so Tuesday belongs to the Ducal Palace until lunch. Both palaces charge $20.11 (€18) full, with the Palazzo Te concession at $14.52 (€13) for Verona Card, Sigurtà and Vittoriale ticket holders.

Entry to the Camera degli Sposi is quota-limited and must be booked on mantovaducale.coopculture.it, with the group entering from Piazza Castello. The Mantova e Sabbioneta Card costs $53.63 (€48) for 72 hours and covers one entry to Palazzo Te, the Ducal Palace, Palazzo d'Arco and the Bibiena Theatre, the Sant'Andrea audio guide and more, plus local buses on weekdays. Our sum says the card pays off once you add the two palaces plus one more site, so it suits anyone staying two or three days or pairing Mantua with Sabbioneta.

How Much Time to Give Mantua

Mantua rewards a full day more than a rushed half day. The train times decide the frame.

A half day fits one palace plus the lakefront, and it works only if you accept the quota risk on the Camera degli Sposi or take Palazzo Te alone. A full day is the honest minimum for both palaces, Sant'Andrea and the Mantua river cruise, and it matches the sample timetable with departures at :49 past the hour from Desenzano and returns from Mantova at :29 until 20:29. The bike day is the third shape: ride the Mincio path one way, and take the 1 h 27 min train back from Mantova at :29.

Because the Ducal Palace closes Mondays and Palazzo Te opens at 13:00 Tuesdays, a two-palace day is possible on Tuesday, Wednesday through Sunday, but never on Monday. If you only have two nights at the lake, fit Mantua in with a plan built on Lake Garda in 3 days.

Do and Don't on a Mantua Day Trip

Do

  • Do book the Camera degli Sposi slot on mantovaducale.coopculture.it before you travel, because entry is quota-limited.
  • Do start at the Ducal Palace if you travel on a Tuesday, since Palazzo Te stays closed until 13:00.
  • Do take the regional trains rather than high-speed, because high-speed fares are dynamic and the regional fare holds at $7.21 (€6.45) from Peschiera.
  • Do spend 105 minutes on the lakes with the river cruise, through the Vallazza wetland.
  • Do keep your Verona Card, Sigurtà or Vittoriale ticket, because it cuts Palazzo Te to $14.52 (€13).

Don't

  • Don't plan the Ducal Palace for a Monday. It is closed all day.
  • Don't arrive at Palazzo Te before 13:00 on a Tuesday. The doors open only in the afternoon.
  • Don't plan to park in the old centre. Leave the car outside it and walk in.
  • Don't try the northern route from Riva as a casual morning trip. Bus to Rovereto, train to Verona, train to Mantova eats half the day.
  • Don't skip Sant'Andrea on Piazza Mantegna. The city card includes its audio guide.

Five Things Most Visitors Do Not Know

- Mantua's three lakes are man-made. They were created in the 12th century as defences and are fed by the Mincio, which flows out of Lake Garda at Peschiera. (Wikipedia: Mantua) - The Camera degli Sposi was painted by Mantegna in a tower of the Castle of St George for Ludovico III Gonzaga, and entry is quota-limited.

(Palazzo Ducale) - The water lift on the Mantua cruise uses the principle of communicating vessels, the idea Leonardo da Vinci worked with, and joins two different water levels. (the Mantua river cruise) - Bosco Fontana, a few kilometres before Mantua on the cycle path, was once a Gonzaga hunting reserve. (Parco del Mincio) - Sant'Andrea took 328 years to build after its 1472 start, and the 1414 bell tower was kept beside the new facade.

Mantua From Lake Garda: Questions

Is Mantua, Italy worth visiting from Lake Garda?

Yes, if you want palaces and frescoes rather than lake views. Mantua and Sabbioneta have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008, and the city holds two major palace complexes, a Mantegna fresco cycle and a boat route on its own lakes. It pairs well with the beach days built into things to do at Lake Garda.

Does Mantua, Italy have a train station?

Yes. The station is called Mantova. From the lake you reach it with a change at Verona Porta Nuova. In a sample weekday timetable Desenzano to Mantova takes 1 h 28 min for $8.60 (€7.70), and Peschiera to Mantova takes 1 h 19 min for $7.21 (€6.45). High-speed fares are dynamic, so regional trains are the predictable choice.

What does Mantua mean in Romeo and Juliet?

Mantua is the city where Shakespeare sends Romeo after his exile from Verona, and it is where he hears the false news of Juliet's death. The distance matters to the plot, because the message that Juliet lives never reaches him in time. Verdi later set Rigoletto in Mantua as well.

Can you reach Mantua from Lake Garda by boat?

No passenger boat runs from the lake to Mantua. The link is the Mincio river itself, which leaves Lake Garda at Peschiera and fills Mantua's three lakes, and the 43.5 km cycle path follows it. On the water, your options are the Mantua river cruise on the city lakes for $20 or the e-bike ride to Borghetto on the first stretch of the river.

What is closed on Monday in Mantua?

The Ducal Palace closes every Monday, which removes the Camera degli Sposi from the day. Palazzo Te stays open Monday from 9:00 to 19:00, so Monday works if you accept one palace instead of two. The reverse applies on Tuesday, when Palazzo Te opens only at 13:00 and the morning belongs to the Ducal Palace.

How long do you need in Mantua?

A full day. That covers one palace in the morning, lunch by the lakes, the second palace in the afternoon and Sant'Andrea in between, with time for the Mantua river cruise. Half a day fits one palace plus the lakefront only. The sample timetable gives departures at :49 from Desenzano and returns from Mantova at :29 until 20:29, which supports a long day out.

Is the Mantova e Sabbioneta Card worth it?

It costs $53.63 (€48) for 72 hours and covers one entry to Palazzo Te, the Ducal Palace, Palazzo d'Arco and the Bibiena Theatre, the Sant'Andrea audio guide and more, plus local buses on weekdays. Our sum says it pays off once you add the two palaces plus one more site, so it suits a stay of two or three days or a Mantua and Sabbioneta pairing rather than a single rushed day trip.

Mantua or Verona From the Lake

Verona is the easier day. From Peschiera the regional train takes 19 minutes at $4.52 (€4.05). Mantua is the quieter Renaissance day, about 1 h 19 min from Peschiera with a change at Verona.

They share concessions too: a Verona Card cuts Palazzo Te to $14.52 (€13), so a Verona trip earlier in the week pays you back in Mantua. If you cannot choose, see how Verona from Lake Garda compares, then scan the other day trips from Lake Garda and Lake Garda attractions.

See Mantua From Its Lakes

The 105-minute river cruise sails Lago di Mezzo and Lago Inferiore past the Gonzaga palace and through the Vallazza wetland, and it passes a water lift built on Leonardo's principle of communicating vessels. Tickets cost $20 per person and commentary is in Italian.

You can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before departure.
