Lake Garda Car Rental: Do You Need One, and What It Really Costs
A Lake Garda car rental can cost you $92.73 (€83) to $372.03 (€333) in fines on day one if you drive into Sirmione, and it is still the right call for some trips. The car opens the north tip, the west shore villages and the winter months when the boats stop running. In Sirmione it meets a closed centre, cameras and fines. This page sets out when a car pays off, what the paperwork needs and what the fees really are. For the alternatives, see getting around Lake Garda and the airports page.
Quick answer Car or not, and the rules that cost money
You do not need a car for the south shore, where trains reach Peschiera from Verona in 13 minutes for $4.52 (€4.05). A car pays off for the north and west shore, for the Strada della Forra, and from 2 November to 12 March when the passenger boats stop. Carry an International Driving Permit with your US licence. Skip the car inside Sirmione entirely.
Key takeaways
- Sirmione's historic centre is a limited traffic zone from 23 March to 13 October. Cameras read plates at one electronic entry and fines run $92.73 (€83) to $372.03 (€333). Park at Piazzale Monte Baldo and walk in. Full detail on the Sirmione page.
- The only car ferry on the lake crosses between Maderno and Torri in 30 minutes. A car up to 4.50 m costs $16.65 (€14.90) one way with the driver included. There is no car ferry between Malcesine and Limone. Fares and times on the ferry page.
- You can see the big sights without touching a steering wheel. The Dolomites full day from the lake at $95 includes hotel pickup and drop-off, and the planning is laid out on the Dolomites day trip page.
- Rent in the lake towns rather than at a far airport if your trip is mostly on the water. Trains reach Desenzano and Peschiera from Milan and Verona directly, and one Desenzano branch sits about 1.8 km from the station. Compare the where to stay page before fixing a base.

Do You Need a Car at Lake Garda
The answer changes with your base town and with the month you travel.

Base on the south shore and you do not need a car. Desenzano and Peschiera sit on the Milan-Venice railway, Verona is a short regional hop away, and Sirmione is reached from both stations by bus or taxi. Base on the east shore and buses plus boats cover Lazise, Bardolino, Garda and Malcesine well in the ferry season, which ends in early November.
Base in the north and the nearest station is Rovereto, with Trentino Trasporti buses on to Torbole, Riva and Arco, so a car is convenient but not essential. On the west shore, where Salò, Gardone Riviera, Gargnano and Limone have no railway at all, a car helps most. The season decides the rest: from 2 November to 12 March the only boat on the whole lake is the Maderno-Torri car ferry, and the Monte Baldo cable car is closed 2 November to 25 December, so the north and east shores become a car-and-bus trip.
A car also makes possible the drives walkers and swimmers cannot do, above all the Strada della Forra up to Tremosine, and the slow gardesana roads hugging the water. Pick your days from things to do in Lake Garda, then decide. The table below matches each base to the verdict.
| Your base | Need a car? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Desenzano, Peschiera, Sirmione | No | Two stations on the Milan-Venice line, buses and taxis to Sirmione |
| Lazise, Bardolino, Garda | Not in season | ATV line 164 plus the boats from 13 March to 1 November |
| Malcesine | Helpful | ATV 483/484 and boats in season, the cable car closes 2 November to 25 December |
| Riva, Torbole, Arco | Optional | Train to Rovereto, then Trentino Trasporti buses |
| Salò, Gardone, Gargnano, Limone | Yes | No railway, and no passenger boats from 2 November to 12 March |

Where to Pick Up the Car
Desks cluster at the airports and in the lake towns near the stations.
Airport desks wait at Verona, Bergamo and the Milan airports, which is handy if the lake is one stop on a longer drive. Town branches also operate at the lake, so you can arrive by train and rent only for the days you need the car. One worked example: the Enterprise/Locauto branch at Via Adua 3 in Desenzano sits about 1.8 km from the station.
Taking the train to the lake and renting there, our advice, spares you the A4 motorway slog and city parking for the first days of the trip. Verona airport to the south shore, or Bergamo via Bergamo station, both work too, and the routes are laid out on the Milan to Lake Garda page. Two practical notes before you book.
One-way returns, picking up at one desk and dropping at another, cost a fee set by category and date, so ask the desk for the amount rather than guessing. And check the opening hours against your arrival time, because pick-up outside posted hours carries a surcharge, covered below in the costs section. The town you rent in should be the town you sleep in.
See Desenzano del Garda if a southern base with a station and a rental desk appeals.

Licence, Permit and Age
Two documents and one card, sorted before you fly.
The US Embassy in Italy is direct about it: American tourists who plan to drive should obtain an International Driving Permit before leaving the US. The alternative it names is carrying an official Italian translation of the licence, which is harder to arrange at a rental desk, so get the permit at home. Are Americans allowed to rent cars in Italy?
Yes, with the permit, the US licence and photo ID. The published terms of the Desenzano branch give a sense of what desks check, as an example. Drivers need a licence held for at least 3 years, so a brand-new driver cannot rent.
Digital licences shown on a phone are not accepted, carry the physical card. Bring photo ID and a credit or debit card in the renter's own name. Age cuts both ways here.
There is no maximum age. Young drivers pay instead: a fee of $24.58 (€22) per day plus VAT at ages 19 to 21, and $12.29 (€11) per day plus VAT at ages 22 to 24, at this branch. Adding a second driver costs $5.59 (€5) per day plus VAT.
If anyone else will take the wheel, add them at the desk, because the rental conditions apply to every additional driver. Terms vary between companies and branches, so read the specific branch page before you pay.

What the Rental Adds Up To
The daily rate is only the first line of the bill.
No daily rate is printed here for the lake branches: prices change by date and by car category, so run a live quote for your exact days. The figures worth planning around are the fees, and the clearest published example is again the Desenzano branch's own terms. The damage-waiver excess, the amount you owe if the car is damaged even with basic cover, is $1,340.64 (€1200) for mini and economy cars and $1,899.24 (€1700) for compact automatics and intermediates.
That number is why the counter conversation about extra insurance matters. Read the excess before deciding whether to buy the zero-excess product, rather than deciding at the desk under time pressure. Refuelling is the second trap.
Return the car below full and the charge is $39.10 (€35) plus the fuel itself. Fill up at a station near the drop-off and keep the receipt. Picking up outside posted hours costs $40.89 (€36.60) at this branch, which turns a late flight into a real bill, so match the opening hours to your arrival.
Winter drivers get one break: snow chains are provided free from 15 November to 15 April. The table lists the fees side by side.
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Damage-waiver excess, mini and economy | $1,340.64 (€1200) |
| Damage-waiver excess, compact automatic and intermediate | $1,899.24 (€1700) |
| Refuelling charge if returned below full | $39.10 (€35) plus fuel |
| Out-of-hours pick-up | $40.89 (€36.60) |
| Additional driver | $5.59 (€5) per day plus VAT |
| Young driver, 19-21 | $24.58 (€22) per day plus VAT |
| Young driver, 22-24 | $12.29 (€11) per day plus VAT |

Driving Rules That Cost Money
Three Italian rules catch out first-time visitors with their wallets.
Sirmione's Limited Traffic Zone
Sirmione's historic centre is closed to traffic, and from 23 March to 13 October it is a limited traffic zone. Authorised vehicles only, plates recorded by cameras at one electronic entry point. Drive in without authorisation and the fine runs $92.73 (€83) to $372.03 (€333).
On 31 days in the season the centre goes further and becomes pedestrian from 14:00 to 19:00, with transit banned to all categories, exit included. The practical move is simple: park at Piazzale Monte Baldo, the main car park for the old town, and walk in. Hotel guests staying in the centre are registered at the Welcome Point, so their booked arrival is authorised.
Stopping in Piazzale Porto for loading is limited to 2 hours with a ticket. The full parking picture is on the Sirmione page.
Winter Tyres and Chains
Some parts of Italy require you to carry snow chains on board or to run winter tyres from November to April, regardless of the weather on the day. The Desenzano rental branch states this on its own terms, which is why it supplies chains free in that window. The roads up to the Dolomites, above all the passes, are exactly the terrain the rule targets.
If you plan mountain driving in the cold months, confirm at pick-up that the chains are in the boot and that you know how they fit. More on the cold season on the winter page.
Motorway Exits
The south shore is served by the A4 Turin-Trieste motorway, with a Sirmione exit for the peninsula towns, or the slower SR11 ring road. For the north tip, take the A22 Brenner motorway to the Rovereto Sud/Lago di Garda Nord exit, then the SS240 down to Riva del Garda, about 17 km from the exit. The alternative from Trento Nord runs along the SS45b for almost 40 km, slower and quieter.
Garda Trentino links traffic webcams for the SS240 between the motorway exit and the lake, worth a look before you set off. More on the northern base on the Riva del Garda page.

Parking and the Car Ferry
Park once and walk, or float the car across the middle of the lake.
Sirmione first, because it is where parking goes wrong. Piazzale Monte Baldo is the main car park for the old town, and the SirmioPark website shows free spaces in real time for the main car parks, so check it before you drive in rather than circling. Guests of centre hotels use Grifo Parking in Piazzale Europa, with an electric luggage shuttle carrying bags to the hotel, and a summer shuttle runs from the Colombare car parks to the castle.
Elsewhere, the useful car movement on the lake is not a road but a boat. The Maderno-Torri car ferry crosses the middle of the lake in 30 minutes, linking the west Gardesana to the east Gardesana without the long drive around the south. Fares from 1 April, driver included: a car up to 3.50 m costs $13.74 (€12.30), up to 4.50 m $16.65 (€14.90), over 4.50 m $20.56 (€18.40), and a camper $27.93 (€25).
Each extra adult in the car adds $8.38 (€7.50). In winter this crossing is the only boat service on the entire lake, so plan around it. Note what does not exist: there is no car ferry between Malcesine and Limone, that crossing is passengers only.
Timetables and fares on the ferry page.
| Car ferry Maderno-Torri | One way |
|---|---|
| Car up to 3.50 m, driver included | $13.74 (€12.30) |
| Car up to 4.50 m, driver included | $16.65 (€14.90) |
| Car over 4.50 m | $20.56 (€18.40) |
| Camper | $27.93 (€25) |
| Motorbike up to 250cc | $10.95 (€9.80) |
| Extra adult | $8.38 (€7.50) |

Lake Garda Car Rental: Questions
Do you need a car at Lake Garda?
Not on the south shore. Desenzano and Peschiera have railway stations on the Milan-Venice line, Verona is 13 to 23 minutes by regional train, and boats serve the towns from spring to early November. A car earns its cost on the west shore, around the north tip, for hill drives such as the Strada della Forra, and from 2 November to 12 March when the passenger boats stop.
Can Americans rent a car in Italy with a US licence?
Yes. The US Embassy in Italy advises American tourists who plan to drive to get an International Driving Permit before leaving the US, and carry it with the US licence. Rental desks also want a physical licence held at least 3 years, photo ID and a card in the renter's name. A US licence alone can work with an official Italian translation, but the permit is the simple route.
Where is the best place to rent a car for Lake Garda?
For a lake-only trip, rent at the lake. Desenzano has town branches near the station, one example being the Enterprise/Locauto desk at Via Adua 3 about 1.8 km from the station, so you take the train in and rent for the driving days only. Airport desks at Verona, Bergamo and Milan suit road trips that continue beyond the lake. One-way returns carry a fee set by category and date.
Is it easy to drive around Lake Garda?
The lake is 51.60 km long and the shore roads run through one town after another, so allow time. The easy parts are the A4 at the south and the A22 to the Rovereto Sud exit for the north, about 17 km from Riva. The Strada della Forra climbs a narrow gorge to Tremosine. Avoid the Sirmione peninsula by car in season, it is a camera-enforced ZTL.
Can you drive into Sirmione?
Not into the historic centre without authorisation. From 23 March to 13 October the centre is a limited traffic zone with one electronic entry and plate cameras, and fines run $92.73 (€83) to $372.03 (€333). On 31 days the centre is also pedestrian from 14:00 to 19:00. Park at Piazzale Monte Baldo and walk. Hotel guests in the centre are registered at the Welcome Point, and taxis may drive booked guests to their accommodation.
Is there a car ferry on Lake Garda?
One, between Maderno on the west shore and Torri del Benaco on the east. The crossing takes 30 minutes and a car up to 4.50 m costs $16.65 (€14.90) one way with the driver included. In winter it is the only boat service on the lake, since passenger boats stop from 2 November to 12 March. There is no car ferry between Malcesine and Limone.
