Milan to Lake Garda by Train: Times, Fares and the Last Train Back

Milan to Lake Garda is one of the easiest rail runs in northern Italy. Milano Centrale has direct trains to Desenzano del Garda-Sirmione and Peschiera del Garda, the lake's only two stations, on the Milan-Venice line. The fast trains take under an hour and the cheap regional takes under 100 minutes. From either station a boat, bus or taxi covers the rest of the lake, as our page on getting around Lake Garda explains. This guide gives the times and fares from a weekday timetable, the last trains back, and a day trip plan that works.

Quick answer Which train, what it costs, the last one back

The direct regional from Milano Centrale reaches Desenzano del Garda-Sirmione in 1 h 23 min for $11.73 (€10.50), leaving every hour at :25 on the weekday timetable. The Frecciarossa does it in 51 minutes from $22.23 (€19.90). Italo serves Peschiera in 56 minutes from $9.94 (€8.90). Sirmione itself has no station, so you continue by boat, bus or taxi from Desenzano.

Key takeaways

  • On the weekday timetable the last direct regional back from Desenzano to Milano Centrale leaves at 22:07, after earlier trains at 20:07 and 21:07. A Frecciarossa leaves at 21:23 and arrives Milan at 22:15. Trains leaving Milan at 22:25 or later end with a replacement bus from Brescia.
  • Sirmione has no station. From Desenzano station take an Arriva bus or a taxi, or in season a boat from Desenzano harbour, 20 minutes for $3.91 (€3.50) in zone 1. Taxis may drive into the closed centre. Plan the last leg with our Sirmione page.
  • Short on time, the Milan day tour to Verona and Sirmione with a boat cruise does the whole run by coach for $115 with lunch and entry tickets included. Compare it with the trains on our Lake Garda tours page.
  • Choose your station by the shore you want. Desenzano del Garda-Sirmione puts you closest to Sirmione and the west shore, Peschiera del Garda puts you near Gardaland and the east shore towns. Both are on the same Milan-Venice line, so pick the exit that saves the second leg.

The Train From Milano Centrale

Two kinds of train run from Milan to the lake, and they differ in speed and in how they are priced. Everything below comes from the weekday Trenitalia timetable, so treat the times as a weekday pattern rather than a promise for every date.

The cheapest option is the direct Regionale Espresso, leaving Milano Centrale every hour at :25 (07:25, 08:25, 09:25 and so on on the weekday searched). It reaches Desenzano del Garda-Sirmione in 1 h 23 min for a fixed $11.73 (€10.50) and continues to Peschiera del Garda in 1 h 32 min for $13.41 (€12). If speed matters more, the direct Frecciarossa leaves at 08:15 and arrives Desenzano at 9:06, 51 minutes, from $22.23 (€19.90).

Other morning Frecciarossa runs change at Brescia onto a regional and take about an hour in total. To Peschiera the direct Frecciarossa runs at 07:15, 07:45, 08:45 and 09:45 in 57 minutes, with fares shown between $20.00 (€17.90) and $27.82 (€24.90). Frecciarossa fares change by train and by date, so an early booking can be cheaper than a walk-up.

There is also a private operator. Italo sells Milan to Peschiera, 127 km in 56 minutes, from $9.94 (€8.90) on its own route page, the lowest starting fare of the three. Here is the picture in one table.

Desenzano or Peschiera

Desenzano's station is officially named Desenzano del Garda-Sirmione, and that second name is the clue. It is the stop for Sirmione, for the west shore towns such as Salò and Gardone Riviera, and for the boats that head up the western side. Peschiera del Garda is the better exit for the east: it sits beside Gardaland, and the boats and buses from there reach Lazise, Bardolino and Garda.

Read more in our Peschiera guide and our Gardaland page. Both stations work for a first visit, so let your target town decide rather than the timetable.

The Last Trains Back to Milan

The return leg decides how late you can stay at the lake, so here is the evening pattern from the same weekday timetable.

Desenzano to Milano Centrale has three direct regionals in the evening, at 20:07, 21:07 and 22:07, each taking 1 h 28 min for the fixed $11.73 (€10.50). The 22:07 arrives Milan at 23:35. If you prefer speed on the way home, a Frecciarossa leaves Desenzano at 21:23 and reaches Milano Centrale at 22:15.

Going the other way late in the day, the 20:45 Frecciarossa from Milan reaches Desenzano at 21:36. After that the line shuts down: journeys leaving Milano Centrale at 22:25 and 23:25 end with a replacement bus from Brescia, arriving at Desenzano at 00:19 and 01:23. That is a slow finish to a long day, so treat it as a fallback rather than a plan.

Our advice for a day trip is simple: work backwards from the 21:07 or 22:07 train and make sure your last boat or bus lands at Desenzano in time to catch it, with a margin for a delayed sailing.

From Malpensa, Linate and Bergamo

Milan's airports sit west of the city, so the rail route to the lake usually goes through Milano Centrale, and our airports page covers the full picture.

From Malpensa the rail route is a Malpensa regional to Milano Centrale and then the direct regional to the lake, 2 h 44 min in total for $28.49 (€25.50). Swap the middle leg for a Frecciarossa and the whole trip takes about 2 to 2.5 hours for $35.64 (€31.90) to $38.99 (€34.90), with high-speed fares moving by train and date. From Bergamo airport a direct train runs to Bergamo station every 15 minutes.

From there, regionals change at Rovato or Treviglio for Desenzano, taking 1 h 21 min to 1 h 42 min for $8.60 (€7.70) to $10.05 (€9), the cheapest airport route of the lot. Trenitalia also sells a combined ticket: a bus from Bergamo airport to Verona Porta Nuova, then a regional to Desenzano, 2 h 07 min to 2 h 51 min in total for $25.36 (€22.70). For orientation, VisitGarda puts Milan's airports, Linate and Malpensa, about 100 km from the lake, so by road or rail this is never a short hop.

From the Station to the Lake Towns

From either station most travellers need one more hop to reach the old towns.

To Sirmione

Sirmione has no station, so from Desenzano or Peschiera station you finish by bus or taxi. The extra-urban buses into Sirmione are run by Arriva, and a taxi from the station is the simplest door-to-door option. Taxis are allowed to enter the closed historic centre and drive you to booked accommodation.

In season there is also a boat: Desenzano harbour to Sirmione is fare zone 1, a 20 minute crossing for $3.91 (€3.50). Inside town, a shuttle runs between Colombare and the historic centre from April to October, with tickets in the Arriva app or at machines. Full details are on our Sirmione page.

To the East and North Shores

Arriving at Peschiera puts you on the east shore in one step. In summer the boat line runs up the coast, calling at Lazise and Bardolino and reaching Garda in about an hour on a summer sample sailing. ATV buses cover the same shore towns by road.

The north is a different matter. Riva del Garda and Torbole are far from both stations: the ordinary boat takes close to 5 hours end to end, while a fast service from Desenzano makes it in under 3 hours in summer. By rail the route is a train from Milan or Desenzano via Verona to Rovereto, then a Trentino Trasporti bus down to the lake, though bus tickets cannot be bought on board.

For the whole boat network, zones and passes, see our ferry guide, and for the north read our Riva del Garda page.

A Day Trip From Milan That Works

A Milan day trip to the lake is entirely doable by train if you anchor it on one town and respect the closing days.

Here is a sample plan built from the weekday timetable. Take the 08:15 Frecciarossa or the 07:25 regional from Milano Centrale to Desenzano del Garda-Sirmione. From Desenzano continue to Sirmione by boat or bus.

In season you can also add a quick loop with the 25-minute Sirmione peninsula cruise from the castle harbour for $13, or run the whole day with a guide on the Milan tour that combines Verona and Sirmione with a boat cruise. In Sirmione, visit Scaligero Castle, open Tuesday to Sunday and closed Mondays, and the Grottoes of Catullus, which also close on Mondays. A combined ticket covers the castle, the Grottoes and the Roman villa in Desenzano for $22.34 (€20), valid 7 days.

Work your way back to Desenzano in time for the 20:07 or 21:07 regional. Two cautions: on Mondays both Sirmione sights shut, so pick another day, and from 2 November to 12 March no passenger boats run on the lake at all, which changes the winter plan. For more ideas see our page on one day at Lake Garda, our Sirmione castle guide, the Grottoes page and our list of things to do in Lake Garda.

Driving From Milan

A car gives you freedom on the west shore, but Sirmione punishes the unwary driver.

From Milan take the A4 Turin-Trieste motorway and leave at the Sirmione exit, or follow the SR11 ring road. No drive time is printed in the official sources, and traffic on the A4 varies heavily, so check live conditions before you set out. The catch is Sirmione itself.

Its historic centre is a ZTL, a limited-traffic zone, from 23 March to 13 October, with cameras recording plates and fines from $92.73 (€83) up to $372.03 (€333). The main car park for the old town is Piazzale Monte Baldo, and the SirmioPark service shows free spaces in the main car parks in real time. If you would rather not drive at all, read our guide to car rental at Lake Garda, which includes the published terms of one Desenzano rental desk as an example.
