Restaurants in Sirmione: The Three Starred Tables and Where Else to Eat

The restaurants in Sirmione span a narrow range. The Michelin Guide lists exactly three places in town, all with one star, and everything else is trattorias, pizzerias and lakefront bars spread across the old town, Colombare, Lugana and the beaches. This page sorts the starred tables from the everyday ones, explains what to order, and covers the one thing that catches most first-time visitors: the traffic-limited zone around the castle. Start with the Sirmione town page for sights, or the wider guide to Lake Garda restaurants if you are still choosing a base.

Quick answer Sirmione dining at a glance

The Michelin Guide lists three restaurants in Sirmione, La Rucola 2.0, La Speranzina and Tancredi, each with one star. Two sit in the old town behind the castle and Tancredi is out on Via XXV Aprile. Everywhere else is a trattoria, pizzeria or beach bar. On the 31 pedestrian days the centre closes to all traffic from 14:00 to 19:00, while Grifo Parking stays free until 21:00.

Key takeaways

  • Plan the town around the Sirmione page, since the starred tables and the sights sit in the same few streets.
  • Add water to the evening with the Sirmione Sunset Boat Tour, a 45-minute loop from the castle harbour with a flute of Prosecco.
  • For tables beyond town, the broader Lake Garda restaurants guide covers every shore.

Sirmione's Michelin Tables Side by Side

La Rucola 2.0 Vicolo Strentelle 3 One star Spare no expense Yes, near the castle
La Speranzina Restaurant & Relais Via Dante 16 One star Spare no expense Yes

The Three Michelin-Starred Restaurants in Sirmione

All three hold one star and the Guide's top price band. There is no other Michelin listing in town.

La Rucola 2.0

La Rucola 2.0 sits at Vicolo Strentelle 3, a stone's throw from the castle in the historic centre. The Michelin Guide rates it one star for high quality cooking and lists the cuisine as creative. The Guide places it in its most expensive price band, which it sums up as spare no expense, so treat dinner here as the costly evening of your trip.

The inspector's note praises an elegant, creative feel and notes a focused choice of tasting menus, so book ahead rather than walk in. Being in the centre matters for logistics. It is reachable on foot from Piazzale Monte Baldo through the castle gateway, so you can leave the car at the car park and walk to dinner without touching the traffic-limited zone.

Combine it with an evening loop of the peninsula on the Sirmione Boat Tour Around the Peninsula before or after your meal.

La Speranzina Restaurant & Relais

La Speranzina Restaurant & Relais stands at Via Dante 16, in the heart of the old town. The Guide gives it one star for high quality cooking and lists the cuisine as creative, with the same spare-no-expense price band as its two rivals. The inspector's note describes a romantic retreat scented with the Mediterranean, bright interiors in pale colours and a sense of timeless elegance, so this is the table for a slower, more formal evening.

The address is a short walk from the castle through the pedestrian lanes of the centre, which makes arrival simple on foot. If you drive, park at Piazzale Monte Baldo near the entrance and walk in, or use Grifo Parking if your hotel is in the centre and offers the guest parking service. Book well ahead for summer weekends, and on the pedestrian days remember the centre bans all traffic from 14:00 to 19:00, so a late lunch reservation here means arriving on foot or by shuttle.

Tancredi

Tancredi breaks the pattern of the other two starred tables by sitting outside the old town, at Via XXV Aprile 75 on the mainland side. The chef, Vincenzo Manicone, trained with Antonino Cannavacciuolo and runs the restaurant with his wife Sara. The inspector's note describes an elegant restaurant with a glass-fronted dining room.

The Guide rates it one star for high quality cooking, lists the cuisine as creative and places it in the same top price band as La Rucola 2.0 and La Speranzina. Its position is the practical advantage: no ZTL, no pedestrian days and no castle gateway between you and the door, so you can drive there without entering the historic-centre ZTL. That makes it the easiest starred dinner if you are staying in Colombare, Lugana or outside town, or if you dislike the idea of walking into the centre after a long meal.

Where Else to Eat, District by District

Sirmione is a peninsula plus three districts on the mainland. Hotels, trattorias and beach bars spread across all of them.

The Old Town Behind the Castle

The historic centre is where most visitors eat, and the official tourism site lists restaurants, trattorias and pizzerias in the centre, by the lake and in the surrounding hills, pointing to CARS, the consortium of Sirmione hoteliers and restaurateurs, for a member list. Its own map makes no editorial selection, so walk the lanes and read menus. Time your meal around the sights.

The Scaligero Castle opens Tuesday to Sunday 8:30-19:15 and closes Mondays, 1 January and 25 December, with the ticket office shutting 45 minutes earlier. The Grottoes of Catullus open Tuesday to Saturday 8:30-17:00 and Sunday 8:30-14:00, also closed Mondays, and the full ticket is $11.17 (€10). Plan lunch either before the castle or after the Grottoes walk, since both sit in or beyond the same narrow streets.

Colombare

Colombare is one of the mainland districts where Sirmione's tourism office says hotels of all categories sit, alongside Lugana and Rovizza. It sits outside the historic-centre ZTL. The link back to the old town is good too.

A shuttle bus runs from April to October from the Colombare car parks to the historic centre, with its terminus at Piazza Campiello, so you can dine in Colombare and still reach a centre reservation in season. Timetables and tickets live in the Arriva Italia app, tickets bought on board cost more, and ticket machines stand at shuttle stops 1, 2, 4 and 9. Outside shuttle hours the Brescia-Verona extra-urban line runs from Colombare to the centre.

A lakeside promenade also links Colombare and Lugana to the old town on foot, which is the pleasant option on a warm evening.

Lugana

Lugana di Sirmione is, in the words of the official tourism site, at the heart of the production area of the wine of the same name, which makes it the district for a wine-led dinner. The prehistoric settlement at Lugana Vecchia is part of the UNESCO site of Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps, so there is a reason to walk here beyond the tables. Down at the water, the Lido di Lugana on Via Verona keeps a freely accessible green area behind the Church of Santa Maria di Lugana, with no sun beds on the public strip.

The area in front of the restaurant has accessible toilets, showers and sun beds, which you book for weekends on +39 030 9905609, plus canoe, SUP and pedal boat hire. Dogs on a leash are welcome on the beach but not in the water with bathers. For a guided taste of the local white, the Lugana Wine Tasting near Sirmione runs from Via Vigneto in Santa Maria di Lugana.

Beach Bars and Lidos

Sirmione lists seven beaches, and several of them feed you. Lido delle Bionde at Viale Gennari 28 is a cove between the park of Hotel Villa Cortine and the remains of a Roman villa, walking distance from the historic centre, with a bar and restaurant, sun beds, pedal boats, canoes and SUP for hire, and a phone on +39 030 9906919. It faces the sunrise, so it is the spot for an early swim before breakfast, and it has olive trees and a view of the Grotte di Catullo.

Toilets cost $0.56 (€0.50). Lido Galeazzi on Via Lucchino 6 is partly free and partly with sun beds, with pedal boats, windsurf, volleyball and a view across the lake to Monte Baldo. Lido di Lugana's restaurant side has sun beds booked by phone.

For a meal with the sunset instead, Brema beach watches the sun drop behind its hills, and the Sirmione Sunset Boat Tour adds a Prosecco flute on the water.

What to Order in Sirmione

The lake fish and the local white. Both come with stories worth knowing before you sit down.

Lake Fish

Lake fish is the base of Lake Garda cooking, and the official Sirmione tourism site counts about forty species that can be fished in the lake, mostly native. The carpione is described as the most valuable and typical species, one that finds a suitable habitat only in Garda, so it is the single most local thing on any menu here. The other names to look for are alborella, lake trout and coregone, the whitefish, and pike served with local oil.

The same oil matters: Garda extra virgin olive oil shows up in the regional pairings, including the bruschetta served at the Lugana vineyard tastings. Practical advice is simple. Ask which fish is from the lake rather than farmed, order the carpione where it appears, and match the plate to a glass of Lugana.

The broader picture of regional dishes sits in our Lake Garda food guide.

Lugana

Lugana DOC is made mainly from the Turbiana grape, with up to 10% of other non-aromatic white varieties allowed. The zone spans five communes in two regions: Desenzano, Sirmione, Pozzolengo and Lonato in Lombardy, and Peschiera del Garda in the Veneto. Five styles are permitted: standard, Superiore, Riserva, Vendemmia Tardiva and Spumante.

Standard Lugana is almost 90% of production. Superiore needs at least one year of ageing after harvest. Riserva must age at least 24 months, six of them in bottle, so it is the bottle to order with the carpione.

To taste the wines where they are made, the Lugana vineyard tour costs $39 per person, runs 1.5 hours and takes up to 15 people, with two Lugana wines, a red, and salami, cheeses and bruschetta with Garda olive oil. More on the region's wines is in our Bardolino wine guide.

Getting to Dinner in Sirmione

The old town is a traffic-limited zone, and in high season it also closes entirely at set hours.

By Car

The summer ZTL for Sirmione's historic centre runs from 23 March to 13 October. Vehicles need prior authorisation, plates are registered and there is one electronic entry point, so driving in without permission means a fine of $92.73 (€83) to $372.03 (€333). For everyone else the routine is simple.

The main car park for the old town is Piazzale Monte Baldo, phone +39 030 916539, near the castle entrance. Hotel guests staying in the centre can use the private parking service at Grifo Parking in Piazzale Europa, with an electric-vehicle shuttle for luggage. On the 31 pedestrian days of the season, on high-season weekends and holidays, the centre bans transit for all categories, including exits, from 14:00 to 19:00, a total of 155 hours across the season, and bicycles must be pushed by hand between Largo Goethe and Piazza Piatti.

Grifo Parking stays free until 21:00 under the town's plan for hotel guests, so compare hotels in Sirmione if you want to drive in for dinner.

By Boat or Bus

Arriving by water turns the journey into part of the evening. From Desenzano, Sirmione is fare zone 1 on the ferry fare matrix at $3.91 (€3.50) full fare, and the crossing takes about 20 minutes. From Peschiera the ride reads as zone 2 at $6.70 (€6).

Remember the season: no passenger boats run from 2 November to 12 March, so in winter the only way in is road and shuttle. On land, the shuttle bus from Colombare to the centre runs April to October, and outside its hours the Brescia-Verona extra-urban line covers the same run. Check the day's timetable for both, since schedules shift with the season.

For more ways to arrive, see getting around Lake Garda.

Boat fares into Sirmione on the state ferry, by zone from the Navigazione Laghi fare sheet, beside the short cruise that leaves from the castle harbour itself.

Eating in Sirmione: Dos and Don'ts

A short list that keeps dinner cheap, legal and on time.

Do

  • Book the starred tables ahead, because the Guide places all three in its top price band and each takes reservations.
  • Park at Piazzale Monte Baldo and walk into the centre, since it is the designated car park for the old town.
  • Order the carpione and a glass of Lugana Riserva, because the fish is unique to Garda and the Riserva ages 24 months.
  • Use the Colombare shuttle or the ferry from Desenzano in season, because both drop you minutes from the castle gateway.
  • Check the pedestrian-day calendar before a summer dinner, because on 31 days the centre closes to all traffic from 14:00 to 19:00.

Don't

  • Don't drive into the historic centre between 23 March and 13 October without authorisation, because the fine runs $92.73 (€83) to $372.03 (€333).
  • Don't plan a boat arrival between 2 November and 12 March, because no passenger boats run in that window.
  • Don't buy shuttle tickets on board if you can avoid it, because tickets bought on board cost more than those in the app.
  • Don't expect the Michelin list to be longer, because exactly three restaurants in Sirmione hold a star and no other Michelin listing exists.
  • Don't leave beach dining to chance on weekends at Lido di Lugana, because the restaurant's sun beds are booked by phone for weekend use.

Restaurants in Sirmione: Questions

What is the best restaurant in Sirmione?

There is no single answer, but the Michelin Guide's judgement is clear. It lists three restaurants in Sirmione, La Rucola 2.0, La Speranzina and Tancredi, all with one star and all in its most expensive price band. Two sit behind the castle and Tancredi is out on Via XXV Aprile. For everyday meals, the town lists trattorias and pizzerias across the centre, Colombare and Lugana, which our Sirmione page helps you place.

How many Michelin-starred restaurants are in Sirmione?

Exactly three, all with one star: La Rucola 2.0 at Vicolo Strentelle 3, La Speranzina Restaurant & Relais at Via Dante 16 and Tancredi at Via XXV Aprile 75. No other restaurant in town carries any Michelin listing. All three are creative kitchens in the Guide's spare-no-expense band, so budget accordingly and book. Our page on Lake Garda restaurants lists starred tables in the other towns too.

Where can I eat in Sirmione away from the crowds?

Head out of the old town. Colombare and Lugana are the mainland districts where the tourism office says hotels of all categories sit, and both have neighbourhood tables plus a lakeside promenade back to the centre. Tancredi, the starred restaurant on Via XXV Aprile, also sits outside the traffic-limited zone. For a quieter arrival, the Sirmione away from the Crowds Boat Cruise Guided Walk and a Drink caps groups at 12.

What food is Sirmione known for?

Lake fish and Lugana wine. About forty species can be fished in the lake, and the carpione is described as the most valuable and typical, a species found only in Garda. Alborella, lake trout, coregone and pike with local oil follow it onto menus. The white to pour is Lugana, made mainly from the Turbiana grape, and Sirmione sits at the heart of its production zone. More dishes are in our Lake Garda food guide.

Can I drive to a restaurant in Sirmione's old town?

Only with prior authorisation. The summer ZTL runs from 23 March to 13 October, with one electronic entry point and registered plates, and fines range $92.73 (€83) to $372.03 (€333). The normal routine is to park at Piazzale Monte Baldo and walk in, or use Grifo Parking if your centre hotel offers the guest service. On the 31 pedestrian days all traffic stops from 14:00 to 19:00. Full details are on our Sirmione page.

Sunset on the Water, Then Dinner

The 45-minute sunset loop leaves the small harbour in front of the castle with a glass of Prosecco, for $34.21, in groups of up to 20, back in time for a dinner booking.
