This sirmione boat tour is a 25-minute loop around the Sirmione peninsula, run by Garda Tours (Motoscafisti Consortium Sirmione) from the small harbor in front of the Scaligero Castle. It costs $13 per person with taxes and fees included, carries up to 20 people, and holds a 4.7 rating from 3,582 reviews. It suits anyone who wants the peninsula from the water without giving up half a day, and it pairs with a walk through the old town on a Lake Garda trip.

About This Tour

A short sightseeing cruise around the Sirmione peninsula on Lake Garda. The boat leaves from Piazzale Porto, the small harbor in front of Sirmione Castle, and circles the peninsula in 25 minutes. You stay on the water the whole time. The captain points out Maria Callas Villa, the Grottoes of Catullus, the largest Roman ruins in northern Italy, and the sulfur spring where thermal water bubbles to the surface.

It is the cheapest and shortest of the Sirmione boat trips on this site, so it works as a first taste of the lake. Starting times show at booking. Free cancellation applies up to 24 hours in advance.

  • Skipper narration in Italian or English covering the villa, the ruins and the spring
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance, with weather refunds or reschedules

Who it's NOT for: Travellers who want to step off at sights or cross the lake should book the Lake Garda Boat Cruise to Sirmione instead.

Before You Go

A few practical points shape the day: the driving restrictions in Sirmione's center, the euro, and the weather rules on this cruise.

Driving and the ZTL

Sirmione's historic center is a ZTL, a limited traffic zone. The summer regulation applies from 23 March to 13 October, vehicles need prior authorisation and violations carry fines of $92.38 (€83) to $370.63 (€333). Park outside the center and walk to the pier.

On 31 pedestrianisation days in the season, transit is banned 14:00 to 19:00, and bicycles must be pushed by hand between Largo Goethe and Piazza Piatti.

Money, Weather and What to Bring

Italy uses the euro, at the European Central Bank reference rate 1 EUR = 1.1130 USD. The cruise runs in ordinary weather, and the itinerary may shift with conditions. If weather cancels it, you get an SMS and pick a refund or a new date, so keep your phone at hand.

Bring sun protection and a layer for the wind, and keep your booking reference reachable. No minimum age, difficulty level or wheelchair rule is stated in the listing, so ask the operator at booking if any of those matter to you.

How the Tour Runs

The whole trip is one loop from and back to the harbor in front of Sirmione Castle. Departure times are shown at booking rather than printed here, and no stop durations apply because the boat does not land.

Meeting Point

Meet at Garda Tours - Motoscafisti Consortium Sirmione, P.le Porto, 25019 Sirmione BS. That is the small harbor directly in front of Scaligero Castle, so you can pair the cruise with a castle visit on the same walk.

The Loop

Once aboard, the boat sets out around the peninsula for 25 minutes of sightseeing. Highlights in order are Maria Callas Villa, the Aquaria beauty center and the Grotte di Catullo, home to the largest Roman ruins in northern Italy. The loop closes by Sirmione's sulfur spring, where you watch the thermal water bubbling up, and passes the castle before returning to the pier.

Sirmione Around the Boat Trip

Sirmione deserves more than 25 minutes. The town sits on a narrow peninsula, and its two headline sights are a short walk from the pier where the boat starts.

Two Sights, One Ticket

The Scaligero Castle (Rocca Scaligera) stands at the entrance of the old town, and the Grottoes of Catullus sit at the peninsula's tip. Both cost $11.13 (€10) full price, with a $2.23 (€2) reduced ticket for EU citizens aged 18-25, and under-18s enter the castle free. The Ministry of Culture lists a combined ticket covering the castle, the Grottoes with the museum and the Roman Villa in Desenzano for $22.26 (€20), valid 7 days.

The boat passes both sights, so you can decide from the water which one to enter after.

  • Scaligero Castle: Tuesday to Sunday 8:30-19:15, ticket office closes 45 minutes earlier, closed Mondays
  • Grottoes of Catullus: Tuesday to Saturday 8:30-17:00, Sunday 8:30-14:00, closed Mondays, last entry 40 minutes before closing
  • Payment at the Grottoes is cashless

Pairing It with Other Trips

If 25 minutes leaves you wanting more water time, the Sirmione Sunset Boat Tour runs 45 minutes with a glass of Prosecco at sunset. To take the wheel yourself, rent the Sirmione Fiat 500 Boat Rental, $143 per boat for up to 4 people for an hour. For a private boat trip toward the islands, look at the Isola del Garda Private Boat Tour.

Public Ferry Instead of a Boat Tour

Lake Garda's public ferries are run by Navigazione Laghi, the state operator. They are line services between towns, not a hop-on hop-off sightseeing loop.

How the Fares Work

Fares are set by zone on an official matrix. Sirmione to Garda reads as zone 4, $12.80 (€11.50) one way full fare. Desenzano to Sirmione is zone 1, $3.90 (€3.50), and the summer timetable shows the crossing takes 20 minutes.

Children 4-11 pay reduced fares and fast SR services carry a supplement. Tickets bought on board cost $1.11 (€1) extra per passenger when the ticket office is open.

RouteZoneOne way full fare
Desenzano to Sirmione1$3.90 (€3.50)
Peschiera to Sirmione2$6.68 (€6.00)
Sirmione to Garda4$12.80 (€11.50)
Sirmione to Riva del Garda6$17.81 (€16.00)

Not a Tour, and Not Year Round

A ferry seat gets you from town to town with no commentary and no loop around the peninsula. For the sights from the water, the $13 cruise on this page does that job. And note the season: from 2 November to 12 March the only service on the lake is the Torri-Maderno car ferry, with no passenger boats anywhere else.

The summer timetable runs 16 May to 4 October. For a longer day on the water with commentary, compare the Lake Garda Boat Cruise to Sirmione instead.

Sights You Can Land At After the Cruise

The boat shows you the castle and the Roman ruins from the lake. Landing at them costs extra, and both shut on Mondays.

Tickets and Hours

Scaligero Castle charges $11.13 (€10) full, with a $2.23 (€2) reduced ticket for EU citizens aged 18-25 and free entry under 18. The keep is part of the ticket. The Grottoes of Catullus, with the archaeological museum, also charge $11.13 (€10) full and $2.23 (€2) reduced, cards only on site.

These are the hours the Ministry of Culture lists, so check its page before you go.

Planning Around the Monday Closure

Both sights close on Mondays, so a Monday cruise means the views from the water are what you get. The combined ticket includes the Roman Villa in Desenzano, which pairs well with arriving by ferry from Desenzano. It stays valid 7 days, so you can spread the three sites over several days.

If you would rather see Roman-scale ruins plus lake towns in one go, the Lake Garda Tour from Verona with Cruise combines Sirmione and Lazise in a day.

Getting to the Pier Without a Car

The pier sits inside the restricted old town, so arriving by ferry or train plus ferry is the calmest way in.

Ferry from Desenzano or Peschiera

Desenzano del Garda to Sirmione is fare zone 1, $3.90 (€3.50) one way, about 20 minutes on an ordinary ferry in the summer timetable. Peschiera to Sirmione is zone 2, $6.68 (€6.00). Trains from Verona and Milan reach Desenzano and Peschiera, so check Trenitalia for journey times.

From the Sirmione ferry landing it is a short walk along the peninsula to Piazzale Porto. This pairs well with the Lake Garda Boat Cruise to Sirmione, which lands in town by boat.

Ferry from Peschiera$6.68 (€6.00) one wayZone 2

If You Must Drive

The ZTL in the historic center applies from 23 March to 13 October, with fines from $92.38 (€83) to $370.63 (€333) for entering without authorisation. Use a car park outside the restricted zone and walk in. Arriving by ferry from Desenzano or Peschiera avoids the restriction altogether.

Really great value for money. Part of the boat ride the skipper gave it full throttle - so a free temp face lift thrown in. Everybody felt a small adrenaline rush and appeared to enjoy themselves .
